Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

330ml bottle, poured into Kasteel goblet. A: Very dark amber, just about opaque, one finger tanned head, moderate retention, decent amount of lacing. S: Prune, not an overly pronounced aroma. T: Prune, molasses, burnt candy sugar, no hint of booze. M: Light creamy texture, not too much carbonation. O: Everything that is to be expected from a BSDA, without doing anything to stand out from the crowd, hid the booze really well.

75cl bottle. Beer looks great. Smells sweet caramel, also little bit vanilla. Taste is very sweet, minimal taste of alcohol and bitterness, there is nothing that comes out too strong. Creamy. Awesome sweet and balanced taste. Easy to drink and works great with heavy food like beef. Overall very good beer

Bottle at home, from supermarket. Dark amber/clear brown with off white head. Sweet caramel malt, sugarplums, gumball coating, banana candy, in the background off all the sweetness there’s dades and banana and some mild spices, toast. Big sweet, very light roasted bitterness. Smooth texture and rich/full bodied. Apparently a respected brew, and the palate seems fine, but for my personal taste this is way too sweet. Not my cup of calorie, uhh, tea.

Big frothy off-white head with good retention. Foggy brown dark amber colour. Aroma is caramel, ripe fruit (prune), spicy (cinnamon, clove). Taste is dark ripe fruit (prune, raisin), spicy, yeasty, bitter sweet with spicy finish and lasting spicy after-taste.

Beautiful dark beer. Smells awesome. A little bit of caramel and chocolate. Sweet taste. Very soft on bitterness. Very little alcohol taste. Goes very well with heavy food. Not as good as quadrupel trappists, but it is an awesome in between heavier and softer styles.

Bottle at home. Nicely dark brown colour, cloudy, offwhite creamy head with good retention. Artistic and tasty roasted malty caramel, molasses, sugar cane, dried fruits, spices like clove, ginger, liquorice, cough syrupy. Great balance. Firm body, medium carbonation. Very decent double.

BOTTLE 33 CL. Clear dark brown with ruby highlights, beige head. Loads of dark crystal malts, dried fruit. A hint of alcohol. The taste is also heavy on dark caramel malts, Not much spice or alcohol - just a lot of sugars. Moderate grassy bitterness. Sweet sticky, but smooth mouth-feel. Very nice, just maybe a bit too hard on malts.

Dark brown colour with an average head, Aroma is very complex smoky, woody, coffee and vanilla, carbonation is medium and so does the body, burnt sugar flavor is dominant which is folowed by dark fruits like prunes, low in bitterness and finishes quick and dry.
