COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Sweet and rich, just the way I like it! Wow, I’m surprised the average for this wonderful beer is as low as it is. Flabbergasted, I tell ya!

750ml cork bottle served in a snifter at around 12 degrees: Pours an opaque brown robe showing a timid reddish hue and a certain cloudiness. The hazel head seems creamy and finely structured. It develops great lacing and a good retention. The nose is sweet and complex with strong notes of plums, candied fruit and softer hints of cantaloupe or muskmelon and alcohol. On the tongue, this fine brew explodes into a wild and sweet mixture of milk chocolate, caramel, sugar cane, instant coffee and banana. It feels extra delicate and breaks down on the palate but still keeps its incredible density until it dissolves into a semi-dry finish. Awesome Belgian brew which represents insanely well what a Dubbel should be.

Thuis geschonken. Heerlijk!

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2014 A bottle from 1987. Has gotten understandably sour over time but is deliciously malty. Fantastic.

Bottle 0.33L. Dark brown body with average, frothy, tan head, mostly lasting with some nice lacing. Moderate-to-heavy malty (caramel, roasted) aroma with notes of nuts, red fruits, alcohol and spices. Moderate-to-heavy sweet flavour with a light-to-moderate bitter/hoppy character that comes out in the finish. Medium body with oily texture; soft carbonation; light alcoholic warming in the finish.

The color is very dark, almost black. Nice beige header. Taste is roasted caramel, malt dark and heavy. It has a long finish (semi sweet/bitter), dark fruit body (rich in flavours) so you almost don’t taste the alcohol. A very satisfying beer.
