Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperorís Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

From the 1st sip I fell in love with this beer, the aroma reminded me of bananaís as well as the flavor, very aromatic and nice bubbles, though some might not like this, I found it to be pleasant and relaxing.

Pours a dark purplish brown with a foamy beige head. Wonderful aroma of chocolate, raisin, plum, grape, toffee, fig, and spice. Extremely smooth drinking because of the excellent balance of sweetness, spice and chocolate maltiness. One of my favorite beers.

Fles. Topbier. Mooi schuim, mooie kleur. Een van de weinige waar ik met een gerust hart een krat van koop.

#420... My new favorite beer, ordered on the spur of the moment after the waitress told me they were out of Nocturnum. On tap, deep brownish with a grape colored hue. Light head with lacing. Most amazing flavors i have had in a Belgian, with perfectly sweet grapes, plums, and banana at first, changing abruptly to tones of chocolate and cherry before ending in a sweet , yet lightly drying finish. The taste lingered long after i took a sip. As of now this stands as my new #1 until I can get my hands on my old favorite World Wide stout.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2007 A full bodied great beer. A lot of taste and although sweet. Still a perfect beer for tasting. A beer you can save for years. Tasted this year a new one a beer from 1992, a beer from 87 and last but not least a beer from 1976. And still those beers are still wonderfull. A must have taste for everyone.

330 ml/11.2 oz bottle. The write-up on the side of the bottle said that Gouden Carolus would charm me, and it did. This is one of those commercially produced Belgian strong ales that is better than most of the beer produced by the Trappists. Iíll be getting a bomber next time.

750ml cork bottle served in a snifter at around 12 degrees: Pours an opaque brown robe showing a timid reddish hue and a certain cloudiness. The hazel head seems creamy and finely structured. It develops great lacing and a good retention. The nose is sweet and complex with strong notes of plums, candied fruit and softer hints of cantaloupe or muskmelon and alcohol. On the tongue, this fine brew explodes into a wild and sweet mixture of milk chocolate, caramel, sugar cane, instant coffee and banana. It feels extra delicate and breaks down on the palate but still keeps its incredible density until it dissolves into a semi-dry finish. Awesome Belgian brew which represents insanely well what a Dubbel should be.
