750ml bottle bought from Brewery Creek and poured into a Chimay chalice. Deep garnet in colour with a full, tight, cream head. Malty aroma with cherry, prune, and raisin. Moderately malty and sweet taste; smooth with slightly bitter finish. Moderate carbonation and medium body. Dark, smooth, complex, warming.

bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear dark brown color, beige rim head, splotches of lace. Taste is roasted caramel malt that is dark and heavy, blooming in the palate to a rich, loamy, dark fruit filled body that adds alcohol warmth and semi-sweet malt on the swallow, the mild bittering continuing to a long finish. Big and full and satisfying.

33cl Bottle, Appearance: . Pours a deep, reddish brown colour with a 2 gingers sized , beige head. with ok retention, Aroma: Dried dark fruit, leather, chocolate, wood, a hint of yeast and some alcohol. - Quite nice and complex for it’s style. Taste: Sweet, dried dark fruits, chocolate and caramel. A hint of vanilla and some wood. Nice sliky texture and medium body, but this bottle had a bit too much fizzy carbonation. (Which might be sorted out by storing this longer the best before date suggest it’s Quite fresh.

Classic in every sense of the word, this beer has been in existence since the fifties, but underwent a certain change in the late nineties. Allegedly a derivative of the ’Mechelsen bruynen’ emperor Charles V enjoyed back in the sixteenth century, this is the flagship of Flanders’ oldest brewery. The current version displays a pale beige, sticky, lacing, thinnish but stable head and a clear wine-red colour with little to no visible fizz. Strongly perfumed aroma of cookie dough, port wine, butterscotch, chocolate liqueur, orange peel, coriander seed, cooked corn, baked banana, liquorice, cardamom, star aniseed, apple cake, gingerbread, old cognac, raisins, hints of sour yoghurt, meat and fresh paint, as well as a (luckily) very, very weak hint of nail polish remover. Taste reveals a truckload of candied fruits, sweet in a sugary and spicy kind of way, resinous and smooth mouthfeel with soft carbonation, ubiquitous toffee-like and caramelly malts, a bit oily, candi syrup sweetness cloying a bit, insufficiently balanced with leafy, drying hop bitterness and warming, port-like alcohol. The candi sugary sweetness lingers too much, making it hard for me to pour down and sticking to tongue and throat, yet the aroma is fantastic. I remember this in its old guise, without the weary corn, refermented in the bottle and with the old label; it was equally sweet, but yeastier and more ’natural’ back then, but in its current form, this is still an important Belgian, one of those old-time favorites and a must taste. I do not like overtly sweet beers but in this case, the complex aroma makes it easy to forgive; it would benefit from less sugar, though. Let’s see how the three remaining bottles age in the cellar: if they become anything like that special ’58 version I tasted of this, I’m sure I have invested in a certain amount of happiness five or more years from now...
