Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

750ml bottle bought from Brewery Creek and poured into a Chimay chalice. Deep garnet in colour with a full, tight, cream head. Malty aroma with cherry, prune, and raisin. Moderately malty and sweet taste; smooth with slightly bitter finish. Moderate carbonation and medium body. Dark, smooth, complex, warming.

Much darker than I expected; only against a strong light can you notice that the beer is deep red. The head is nice and beige. Aromas are delicate, almost faint; slight roastiness and sweet breadiness dominated by sweet, dark fruits, quite vinous. The caramel is noticed upon the sip, with sweetness being predominant. Sweet finish just balanced by the hops. The body is dead on. A nice impression but nothing remarkable.

Pours a dark, amber brown, with long lasting whitish head. Aroma is sweet, with hints of dark fruits. Taste of a nice dubbel, with notes of Belgian sugars. Well balanced and drinkable. Thumbs way up. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330ml bottle on Ko Phangan. Don’t believe I’ve ever seen this in the States, definitely not on the West Coast. Beautiful dark plum pour, little bit of lace, and a white head around the rim. Dark fruit malts, candied sugar, and a hint of roast on the nose. On the flavor is quite similar, dark and fruity in the plum realm, hints of buried coffee, and bits of candied sugar. A touch of burnt smoke on the finish making a beautifully rounded Belgian Ale!

Dark with a light head that lasts a while. The aroma is a nice mix of dark fruit and candied sugar, along with there wonderful yeast. The flavor is a little on the sweet side but that’s to be expected. All in all, a fantastic beer.

Aroma is raison, fig, plum, belgian sugar and wild yeast. Taste is a very nice dark fruit sweetness paired with the belgian sugars. Taste has a slight liquor snap but a pleasant one. Body is a dark amber with a head that is a thin lace that retain s well.

330 ml bottle into chalice, bottled on 12/12/2012. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep ruby brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge raisin, prune, fig, apricot, pear, apple, caramel, molasses, candi sugar, toast, clove, brown bread, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Incredible aromas with great complexity and balance of malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, prune, apricot, fig, pear, apple, caramel, molasses, toast, brown bread, candi sugar, clove, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of raisin, prune, apricot, fig, pear, apple, caramel, molasses, toast, clove, brown bread, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and robustness of dark malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and lightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome Belgian strong dark ale! All around great complexity, balance, and robustness of dark malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bue à la pression. Raisin très présent. Finale presque florale. Un classique qui porte bien son nom ;)
