Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2014 „Jaargang 2011".

Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel, toasted bread), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with light notes of raisin, overripe banana, clove, brown sugar, alcohol. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.

cam had it in mind for my 100th and it was spot on. pours dark amber with a creamy head. aroma of dark fruits, caramel and spices. taste is amazing. its full of cherries, raisins, toffee, vanilla. but it doesnt get too sweet. the alcohol, herbs and hops tie the great flavours together. its so well balanced. its super smooth, not too fizzy, and warming as you go. probably my new fav beer. cheers for a great night boys

750ml bottle from LCBO. Pour dark reddish brown with a fast disappeared head. Aroma of plum, sweet caramel malt and hint of liquorice. Lot of sweetness, light bitterness, strong taste of Golden Carolus. Full body, average carbonation with a long sweet finish. A very nice heavy beer.

750ml bottle poured in my Grimbergen chalice. 2006 Vintage. That’s a fantastic beer! Really, not much more to say about it. Top 50 Belgium, for sure. A: Brown cloudy color. Nice small (one finger) creamy head. S: The nose is just fantastic. Dark fruits (plums), toffee caramel, the wonderful (really wonderful) Belgium yeasts, oak and wine. T: Even better. Wonderful malt taste. Strong and Fruity. Balanced sweet. And, once again, the wonderful Belgium yeasts taste. M: Medium body. Very well balanced sweetness-bitterness, medium to low carbonation. D: Excellent. Despite the high ABV it’s very drinkable. Highly recommended. [ BA Review @ 4/1/2010 ]

pours a dark reddish-brown colour under a little but stable beige foam; lot of particules floating in the beer; the aroma is richly malty and fruity (figs and plums) with notes of wood; quite a lot of sweetness, slightöy madeirized, full and regular malt body; the finish is long and malty with more notes of dark fruits, some candi sugar and a touch of warming alcohol down the throat - very good though I’m not sure ageing improved it, on the contrary

"vintage 2007, sampled Feb 2010. dark mahagony-brown with thin tan head. aroma fairly strong of figs, tobacco, leather , spices, and a bit of yeast, sweet malt, a touch of hops...and some alcohol as it warms to room temp. the cork smelled more of tobacco chocolate and leather, and if that aspect would have been more prevelant in the actual beer, i’d have been a happy camper. still very nice as it was. the body was just about right. fairly highly carbonated, but not overdone, like so many belgians, and the big body stood up to it pretty well. the flavor had many of the same aspects of the aroma, with a warming effect from the alcohol. lingering finish. the 07 was pretty soft around the edges, but I would like to hold onto one for another 2-3 years and see what it does."
