Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

~Strong sweet alcohol scent with dried cherries, lots of darker sugars, some spices. ~Pours a dark deep amber brown color with small persistant creamy head. ~Sweet raisin and plum flavor, with brown sugar. Very sweet. ~Very thick creamy feel. Full bodied, chewy. ~ Wow! intense brew. Super malty and thick. I normally dont like beers like this. This one is a nice exception.

750 ML 2008. Despite a very lovely smell nothing in this beer works for me. It’s a complete taste overload of sweetness upon sweetness, and ends up coming across somewhat close to an ice tea.

750mL Bottle.Lovely beer. Overall a bit sweet, but great complexity. Pours an red-amber colour wth good amount of dense tan head. Aroma of spice, port, and apples. Body is thick, and alcohol well hidden by the sweetness. Notes of caramel sweetnes, plums, nutmeg, nuts, and fruit notes. Finish iis slight bitterness, but very clean.

2008 Vintage. Pours a cola brown with beige head. The head sticks around for a while. Aroma is woody, nutty and malty. Notes of licorice. Flavor is sweet - very sweet. Notes of dark fruits, bananas, raisins, figs. Finishes on that sweet note.

Bottle. 25.4 oz. (2008) Split this with Jefferson in the top of the ninth inning as the Phillies clinched the National League Championship for the second consecuitve year. Pours a vivid, electric amber with a velvety, creamy tan head. Aroma of apples, grapes, raisins, vanilla, honey, clove, and hints of pepper, nutmeg, and ginger. Fuller bodied with a lovely warming sensation. Hides the alcohol perfectly. Bold, crisp, tart finish. Excellent Belgian strong ale. Highly recommended.

This beer rocks. The aroma is complete with malts, licorice, and candi additives. What really surprised me was how well the licorice flavor was present, but did not take over. The beer is very complex. You taste a rosted malt flavor, the spice, the licorice, some fruits, and you get the bittering hops at the end. The alcohol content is fantastic. The only way you can tell it is strong is if you evaporate the beer off of you tounge by strongly breathing in.

750ml bottle (2008) poured into a tulip glass produced a medium-thick tan head with brown body. Flavor and aroma of sweet, dark fruits and sugars with hints of caramel/molasses. The 11% alcohol was well concealed. Add this to my favorites list.
