JesseM (660), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada May 28, 2009 Updated: May 29, 2009750mL, from Jan Primus, thanks to matt7215. Thanks guys! Pours a very dark, almost crimson-burgundy kind of colour, very unexpected but nice (gee I thought it would be blue!). Small head for a BSA. Aroma: Very nice, very different from what I expected, loads of fruit esters, cherry, apple, prune, date, purple drink (artificial grape; see Dave Chappelle). An odd mix that actually almost reminds me of Rochefort 10. Boozy but in a more inviting way than cloying. Quite sweet. Flavour is more of the same, but it comes in delicious waves, almost one at a time. A very sweet brew, the lack of yeast is noticable and the malts are left to really run the show. Nice fuller mouth-feel and the alcohol presence makes me believe the 11% claim despite the 9.9% labeling by the LCBO (they’re always such party-poopers about this sort of thing). Quite an impressive brew, not something I’d call ’chuggable’, nor would I wish to funnel it, which is a shame because this is something I tend to look for in my Belgian Strong Ales (Wait, what?). And the bottle is pretty sweet-looking too! If I were the Belgian Emperor I’d probably drink this for breakfast, or in shots off my Empress’ sweet-ass body. Correct style classification is more along the lines of ’Imperial Belgian Strong Ale’. Is that redundant? Is it? I should probably cut myself off here in this rating......... springcreekale (10), Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA May 25, 2009 The 2004 is an especially good year- this beer ages well, poors well, has great aroma, ok color- and great lasting flavor. I was picking up some sweet raisins- and molasses- great if you can find it. scoth (266), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA May 23, 2009 Labeled 2007. Reminder to self, do not drive and then drink a Belgian ale, very foamy. Pours cloudy, dark chocolate brown, with a huge, overflowing head, and good lasting lacing. Smells of caramel, plum, banana, apple, molasses and leather. Medium, velvety smooth body. Sweet malty flavor with lots of intense fruit, cherries, apple, plum, banana, some bread and citrus too. A very big beer, spilled, all over the kitchen. mikalooch (158), , New Jersey, USA May 22, 2009 Bomber. Pours a deep and dark crimson color with a nice head when poured right. Aroma is sweet syrup with dark fruit, plum and raspberry. Very sweet taste, banana, plum, and powdered sugar with a hint of malt in there somewhere. Alcohol is potent but not overpowering. Nice beer, I prefer it a little on the warm side. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA May 22, 2009 @Redlight Redlight-on tap-pours a rich tan head that laces and deep red color. Aroma is dark fruit, medium malt. Taste is very sweet dark fruit-raisin/plum, some licorice, brown sugar, some alcohol. Interesting.
