2003. Dark brown-ruby, sweetish earthy alcohol aroma. Nutty earthy dark fruit tastes prevail. Creamy on the palate. Semi-sweet finish.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 Ungstrup (23984) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 14, 2003
[2000 vintage] The aroma is sweet with notes of wood, yeast, plums, apples and other fruits - lovely complex. The color is redbrown but it has no head. The flavor is sweet and fruity and is very powerful - a fine beer.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 jfm (1718) - Holbæk, DENMARK - AUG 10, 2003
UPDATED: SEP 2, 2004 2001 bottle. The color is dark amber with a little disappointing head. The tastepattern is a complex mix of fruits, caramel, chocolate and a wide vareity of spices. UPDATE: Had a 2000 bottle, and it was very different, more balanced and port-like
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Drew (2411) - Kent, Ohio, USA - AUG 3, 2003
2003 bottle. Dark ruby black body. Raisins, plums and chocolate. Body is thick and rich, yet also bubbly at the same time. Absolutely delicious.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Aurelius (3146) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - JUL 29, 2003
Smells like a banana split -- chocolate, vanilla, caramel, banana. Rich, sweet, sugary flavor,-- warm and bitter on the lips with cocoa and coffee. Loses carbonation too rapidly with some astringency in the palate. A very good and fairly balanced brew, in its category. Beautiful bottle, cap and deep coffee colored brew with good frothy tan head. It's obvious that this would do well with a couple years' cellaring.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Hildigöltur (5107) - København, DENMARK - JUL 18, 2003
2002 vintage. Beautiful dark reddish brown with generous head. Some sediment. Malt, fruits and toffee in the aroma. Full bodied powerful vinous fruity flavoure with some acidity. Long lasting aftertaste.

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2004 2003, bottle. I enjoyed this very much. A bit of chocolate on the nose and in the taste. It's rather sweet ands somewhat fruity. I will age at least one bottle, since I think this will age very well.
UPDATE: Tried this on tap at Monk's, and found it to be even sweeter than the bottle version.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 apoptosis (1316) - Long Island, New York, USA - JUN 7, 2003
Dark red, like blood, with a lush, creamy head. Smells of honey and vanilla. A mellow, yet full-flavored beer. Really refreshing. Medium alcohol. A spicy, pleasant lingering of herbs and wine on the palate. Earthy mild, but clean sweetness. Crisp.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 notalush (3746) - Denver, Colorado, USA - JUN 6, 2003
[2002] (the bottle states 8% abv) This is a very vinous beer, in both aroma and flavor. Ruby color with a lasting white foamy head - this is very subtle but highly enjoyable - the flavor is a creative mix of aged (oak aged?) red wine and fruity malty sweetness that lingers on the tongue and lips - a mix of mild candies and good wine - how can you loose?
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 jbrus (4990) - Delft, NETHERLANDS - JUN 1, 2003
2001 bottle, so over two years old. Has that typical Gouden Carolus aroma and flavors that I love. Mainly banana and vanilla in the aroma. Hazy, redbrown color, beige head, very good lace. Very full, sweet, vanilla, smooth, hops well present. Long lasting finish, sticky with a little alcohol burn.
