Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

Frothy red auburn hue, clearish body. Aroma is strong in alcohol and an underlying sweetness. Big candy caramel, vanilla, syrup, some bing cherry. Taste is more subdued; barley, Belgian yeast, slight alcohol burn at the end. Can tell it’s strong but still holds a nice balance.

2008 vintage poured in a snifter at Austin Flying Saucer. One finger head, nice lacing. Dark brown body. Smell and taste is fruity, sweet and alcoholic in roughly that order. A nice beer, but maybe a little too sweet.

Wasn’t much of a nose or carbonation. Nothing really tasted or smelled off. In the glass and even on the palate this reminded me of a flat Coke.

75cl Bottle from De Bierkoning, to celebrate my 30th birthday and think of 2008, when I was still young. So, vintage 2008 it is. Never been a real fan of GC’s darker beers, but this one’s quite nice. Clear dark reddish brown beer, creamy off white head. Aroma of candy, raisin, caramel, a hint of metal, loads of alcohol. Flavour is very sweet, malts, dark fruits, alcohol, prickly alcoholic finish. Just like other GC dark beers this one is very sweet, but the mouthfeel is so soft and creamy it doesn’t become cloying. It is rather one-dimensional in flavour though, not complex enough to be really great, but still good.

Bottled: Flavor is very sweet, sticky, plums and candies. Very alcoholic, schnaps, sweet finish with hints of roasted malt. Unpleasant alcoholic.

Vintage 2007. Enjoyed in a tulip glass via a 750ml bottle. Pours a deep brown with perhaps some dark ruby highlights. A nice headstand following the pour. Notes of pruins, a touch of Munich malt, and just a bit of toasted sugar greet the olfactory senses. On the palate, the mouthfeel is full but not heavy, and rich without being cloying. I got notes of dark fruits (perhaps some plum) and a complex array of malty sweetness. The finish is perhaps medium-dry. Overall, this one lives up to the hype. A wonderfully crafted example of a difficult and complex style.

The look is dark brown to black in color with a good sized beige to tan colored head. The smell is alcohol, fruits, sweet, toffee, caramel, and molassess. The taste is very smooth, fruity, alcohol, sweet, rasians, and dessert like.
