chmurarz (401), Raciborz now Legnica, Poland May 12, 2009 Redish brown body with very stable lacing, big foam, smooth aroma and taste, very nice palate, alcoholic finish, aroma and flavour is sweet, caramel, fruity sugar, some roastiness, herbs and spicy Geiserich (1775), Vienna, Austria May 11, 2009 Bottled: Flavor is very sweet, sticky, plums and candies. Very alcoholic, schnaps, sweet finish with hints of roasted malt. Unpleasant alcoholic. RHeastings (377), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 11, 2009 Vintage 2007. Enjoyed in a tulip glass via a 750ml bottle. Pours a deep brown with perhaps some dark ruby highlights. A nice headstand following the pour. Notes of pruins, a touch of Munich malt, and just a bit of toasted sugar greet the olfactory senses. On the palate, the mouthfeel is full but not heavy, and rich without being cloying. I got notes of dark fruits (perhaps some plum) and a complex array of malty sweetness. The finish is perhaps medium-dry. Overall, this one lives up to the hype. A wonderfully crafted example of a difficult and complex style. travita (1851), Frisco, Texas, USA May 11, 2009 The look is dark brown to black in color with a good sized beige to tan colored head. The smell is alcohol, fruits, sweet, toffee, caramel, and molassess. The taste is very smooth, fruity, alcohol, sweet, rasians, and dessert like. Hoptagon (132), Arlington, Virginia, USA May 10, 2009 750ml Bottle. 2006 Vintage. Pours a rich crimson hued brown with a medium tan head. The aromatics on this beer are amazing. Prominent notes of candied fruits, raisins, toasted grain and Belgian yeast. Has a complex sweetness that tastes like overripe dark fruits blended with toffee. A bit heavy on the tongue with a rich luster and subtle carbonation. Hops are kept hidden in the background throughout and the beer is sweet, but not cloying. Alcohol notes pop up here and there, but the beer is not at all "hot". Goes out with a creamy dessert character that lingers on the tongue. Complexity shows as the beer warms. I usually let this beer sit out for a half hour or so before the first pour. Only wish I had more.... 41cubs (131), , New Jersey, USA May 9, 2009 Really nice. The Belgians know their yeast don’t they. Aroma is ripe banana, whole grain bread, butter, yeast spiciness and alcohol. The flavor is more of the same but muted as compared to the aroma. Nice even handed mouthfeel that feels a little slick and is heavily carbonated in the beginning. Very good beer that I will and shall drink again. 2008 22oz. dionysus (95), Arizona, USA May 7, 2009 Bottle (2004) pours brown with a thin, creamy tan-colored head. The aroma is that of dark fruit, caramel, and candi sugar. The taste is extremely well integrated, displaying notes of apples, pears, toffee, and raisins. The overall mouthfeel is soft and full, with a somewhat alcoholic finish. This is typically one of my "go-to" belgians when i’m in the mood. Awesome beer, gets better with age. bconley (351), Fern Park, Florida, USA Apr 27, 2009 Bottle at Lee’s house. Tark tobaccoey brownish like color. Smells like sweet caramel, and sugar candy. The strength is felt from first taste. Very malty chocolate, mixed with toffee. Really really good.
