Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

Tap at Toronado. Pours with a dark brown color. Aromas of bread, and fruit pie, caramel. Flavors of dark fruit like plums and dough. Some toffee mixed in with a very nice body. Excellent.

Huge beige lasting head. Dark ruby red body with intense carbonation. Strong banana and licorice aroma with spicy coriander notes. Sweet banana, licorice, and chocolate taste with spicy cardamom and cinnamon notes. Considerable alcohol heat. Full body. Smooth mouthfeel. Harmonic and complex. Long dryish aftertaste of various spices with old hop notes. Alcohol notes blend in nicely. Very nice, if maybe a bit sweet. (0.75l bottle, wine monopoly.)

Draft and Bottle. Pours a dark brown body with a tan coffee head. Very rich coco, chocolate, plums, raisins and caramel. A dark note of port wine, thick and viscous with a nice etoh warming and some chewy fruits and chalky minerals. I love this beer!

750 mL. 2008 version. Gusher ;( Pours a clear dark brown/ruby with a sizable beige head. Little retention. Little lacing. Nose is fairly weak: caramel, Belgian candied fruits, yeast, earth, mustiness, bourbon, and soy sauce. Taste is a little rusty and metallic with an odd array of flavors in conflict: Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, caramel, brown sugar, rum raisin, black cherries, and bourbon. Could be bourbon-barrel aged. Dry, cardboard aftertaste. Perhaps this needs a bit more aging, but regardless I think that the Noel version is an infinitely better ale. I will say that for 11%, this is very light and soft on the palate, enjoyable, and complex. And for that, I give it the benefit of the doubt.

750ml bottle, 2007 vintage. Pours a clear dark burgundy with a sizable tan head. Aroma is candied, dried and ripe dark fruits, spicy yeast and light caramel. Flavor is very nice, with more spicy yeast and dark fruits. Some sweetness for sure, but not overly so. Quite enjoyable and well deserving of the solid rating and reputation. Glad to finally try this one, thanks for the push Eugene!

Strong vanilla aroma, almost bourbon barrel in quality. Undoubtable alcohol presence. Dark at the bottom, but becomes dark red in the light, mocha carbonated head. More bourbon barrel vanilla flavor up front, but ripe fruit (plums) and molasses in the end. Palate is lively, but clean burning. A top notch brew.
