checkmatei1 (629), Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 4, 2009 Draft @ Capone’s: Poured a dark butter toffee color with not much head. The aroma was sweet, apple cider and bubble gum. The flavor was dark fruits, dark sugar, sweet malts and well balanced with yeast. Overall, an excellent beer zapprentice (309), East Setauket, New York, USA Mar 1, 2009 Easily one of my favorites. Incredible dark caramel color with a medium head. Taste just sits on the tongue with a smooth finish. High alcohol content but does not take away from the fruitiness of the beer. Highly suggest. On tap at the Publick House, Boston MitchWayne (264), Kokkola, Finland Feb 27, 2009 2006 vintage. The main note in the smell is apples and a hint of clove, the taste is unbelievably smooth and tastes like powdery apple goodness. Perfect sweetness, can’t taste the alcohol and I wonder why, the taste is suprisingly subtle. The mouthfeel is exquisite. Classy fucking beer. SamGamgee (1394), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA Feb 25, 2009 75cl, 2008 vintage bottle split with LarryLSB at Brasserie Beck. Dark caramel brow color with a lasting beige head of fine bubbles. Vinous, yeasty, and fruity aroma with dates and cherry. The flavor is sweet, yet well balanced, with complex yeast, brown sugar, and dried fruit flavors of dates and prune. Medium-full is body with lively carbonation that lets it glide over your tongue. This was outstanding with chocolate mousse for dessert. Wonderful on its own, but the pairing was truly sublime. I was looking forward to this, and it more than delivered. lagaffe74 (16), Louisiana, USA Feb 25, 2009 2005 vintage that was saved to be shared with a dear friend of mine. Kinda exciting to taste a beer brewed 4 years ago to the day!
It poured a deep dark brown with a small head retention. Aromas of raisins and molasses. On the palate, a very syrupy mouthfeel where the notes of raisins are still here mixed in with molasses and touches of toffee. As it warms up, notes of cherries and chocolate surface. Very warming and sweet finish. Alcohol is very noticeable - more so than when released.
It is quite interesting to taste a beer that is supposed to be able to age for up to 10 years. Later, I would assume that the alcohol would taper off and this beer would become more and more syrupy, inching closer and closer to an old ale or port. Now I know what to do with my 2006 vintage. TomDecapolis (3126), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 25, 2009 Tap at Capones. Pours a murky brown with copper notes and a medium creamy off white head that laced. Aroma and flavor of rich ripe dark fruits, tons of caramel, a little musty, Belgian yeast esters, mixed nuts and sweet grainy malts. Abv well hidden. JohnC (2227), Mission Viejo, California, USA Feb 21, 2009 On tap at the Lucky Baldwin’s Belgian Fest, this beer pours a dark brown with a thin had. Nice complex aroma and flavor of dark fruit, with some nice spicy notes.
