4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle aged since 2009 (I forgot about it). Pours lovely dark caramel color with small white head. Aroma is overwhelming and amazing: raisins, walnuts, caramel, even hints of chocolate. Flavor is a continuation of the aroma except much bolder and with a sweet finish. Alcohol is not dominant in the flavor, although I immediately feel the warmth from it. This brew is a contender for the top of my list and aging must have brought the best in it. Just wonderful!

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 11/20
A fruit forward aroma - plums, raisins, hints of figs. A solid brown pour with an off-white ring and minor lacing preceeds a palate of soft fruit sweet flavors. Plums, figs, candi sugar, and hints of cherries in the finish. Medium-full body with medium carbonation. Overall, a well crafted beer that is to relished with every sip.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Luxury version of the famous Classic, brewed every year in February and bottled in 75 cl bottles with cork. Yellowish beige, regular, delicate and not very stable head, bronze colour. Aroma of candied fruits, cherries, Belgian chocolates, port wine, amaretto, maraschino, honey, marzipan, liquorice and in the beginning an ethereal spicy smell of cloves and aniseed. Candied cherries in the mouth, candi syrup, honey, deep caramelly maltiness, very vinous, port-like, drying in the finish due to the alcohol, even a little bit wry. Still a great beer with interesting ageing potential. Older versions were less strong, less spicy and closer to the old Gouden Carolus Classic; and should have had separate entries here.

Zo’n typische smaak dat sommige mensen dit heel lekker zullen vinden, maar het was niets voor mij

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750mL corked bottle 2013 vintage BB 05/12/2023
Deep ruby body, bright edges, good dense creamy tan head persists.
Dark Belgian candy sugar dominates the nose; earthy, treacle-y, burnt toffee with undertones of bitter chocolate combining with spicy dark fruits, port, clove, pepper & prunes.
Very rich, alludes big alcohol without being hot or fusel, creamy carbonation, velvety smooth on the palate.
Lots of dark, burnt sugars on the palate, plummy dark fruit esters, peppery clovey phenolics, dried fruit undertones - its all there. Hangs on the finish, drying, warming, low bitterness, lingering earthiness.
Seriously decadent stuff, a sipper, but tremendous.

4.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle. 2013 vintage. Pours an unclear ruby red color with practically no head. Very little aroma except for a few whiffs of caramel and...freshness. Taste is something entirely else though - malt, caramel, dark ripe fruits, molasses, yeasts and alcohol. Very sweet and vinous with a full body and low carbonation and a sugary and fruity aftertaste. Pretty heavy stuff. Reminds me a bit of the Gulden Draak. Very good.
