Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

Pours a deep brown with a frothy and lacey light brown head. Aroma of brown sugar, dark dried fruits, caramel, alcohol and dates. Taste is brown sugar, caramel... Basically all the same as above with some residual sweetness bit it’s all so smooth and a great winter or festive warmer/share bottle!

From small bottle. Wonderful dark fruit aroma with thin lacy head. Complex flavors, strong alcohol content, but incredibly smooth. Sweeter than other dark strong ales with perfect carbonation

(2013 750ml bottle from Systembolaget, ~2yr old) Pours cola colour with a big bubbly fading off white head and lace. Aroma is rich toffee malt, molasses, dark rye bread, cola, figs, dark berry/fruit compote, a bit of clove and pepper. Taste has a spicy peppery bite initially, clove and herbal feel, almost woody. Fills in rapidly with sweet toffee, molasses, stewed fruits and jam. Finish has a bit of bready overtones, more sweet toffee and stewed fruits, a bit mineral and dusty for the weight of the beer. Light bitterness and peppery herbal notes, some cigar box mark a drying finish. A bit of alcohol. Medium bodied with moderate effervescent carb. Still pretty sweet with a bit of age but I expect the time has prevented it from being overly syrupy or hot, so it’s a pretty smooth drink. Nicely complex, maybe just a hair off the Westy/Rochefort/Struise level, and a definite warming sipper.

Bottle, 75cL. 2013 Cuvée. @Naintré, shared with daddy. A dark brown opaque beer with a medium beige head ; medium retention ; good lacing. Roast, caramel, fig, walnut, toast, raisin, prune. Medium to heavy sweet, light warming, light dry. Medium voluptuous body, medium texture, light silky, medium carbonation, sweet warming toasty finish. Overall, really enjoyable toasty strong belgian ale ; nice texture ; (too easy) drinkable.

Really nice aromas and Flavors of caramel, bread pudding but not sweet, Belgian yeast spice. Not too boozy. Dark caramel color and a weighty plate with an even smoothness.

A 2015 bottle, I know I should save it BUT I have another that I will store... Pours almost black, very thin head as is typical for Belgian ales. Aroma with leather and caramel... Taste is amazing, rather lively mouth feel, sweet, caramel, hints of coffee and chocolate bitterness. Yet it is refreshing and inviting. Some hints of warm boozy feel in the palate as well... But not a wine feeling.. Overall.. Amazing
