3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
August 7th, 2013 - These days Belgian beers get slotted into my drinking schedule less and less, in favor of the local brewers putting out new and innovative entries on what seems to be a weekly basis. But a return to the old country proves why I should make more trips to the store to take an imaginary trip across the Atlantic. Gouden Carolus’ Cuvée van de Keizer Blauw is a testament to the brilliant engineering that goes into a well balanced Belgian Strong Ale. The pour gives off a deep, burgundy red beer with a head that barely sits up for the photograph, preferring to recline and settle into the body. The nose gives off deep umami hits of soy sauce and miso paste, with a thick layer of that mouth watering cheese richness, though thinner than most BSA’s. A more invokable comparison might be miso dressing, mixed with a bit of artisanal soy sauce and cocoa powder, and even a little dashi for extra warmth and tastiness. On the palate I immediately notice a smooth, velvety texture, which brings with it grape, cheese and yet more umami. The flavor firms and sweetens after it settles, giving off notes of spice and brown sugar, and where there was bordeaux grape in the foretaste, instead there’s a space filled more with baker’s sweets than the sugars of a farmer’s market. Though the alcohol is masked, it’s a sow sipping beer, with a strength behind the curtains. An approach to room temperature brings some pear juice to bear, upping the already remarkable quality of this brew.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Brown body, light brown head. Aroma has cola, bread and chocolate and still noble hops comes through. Alcohol is present. Belgian yeast, which in this case is one of the best strains. Carolus has such wonderful charasteristics. Flavour is without alcohol, but has roastiness and raisins with really nice dark bready malt. Huge beer.

Aroma: malty, sweet, a bit roasted plums, cherries, little cacao, coca-cola
color: very dark brown, almost black, clear
medium body, very smooth
taste, a bit alcohol, but not very agressive, its intense sweet, like Porto-wine
nice to taste something COMPLETLY different than ipa, or beer in general (not belgian way ;) )
