Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

2000 version. Pours dark copper color with thin head. Aroma is big, initial nose is slightly of alcohol but after this warms a little it becomes malty, fruity, with hints of raisins. Tastes of plums, spice (almost like very faint cinnamon), rich and dense. Quite complex. Carbonation is light so you really feel this meaty brew. There is a lot going here so I find it best to drink from a snifter and to share with friends on a cold night.

2007 version in cellar for a year.Green apple flavor with candi sugar abound. Awesome malt balance I cant recommend this beer enough. If you can get this buy it try it. Spice is just right and all the flavors blend together to create an awesome session with a marriage of Belgian goodness.Alcohol is non present for a 10 percent beer...recommend!

Bottle 2008 edition. Hazy reddish brown body with a creamy very long lasting light brown head. Very vinous aroma of dark ripe fruit, yeast and alcohol. Flavour is spicy, malty and sugary but there is too much alcohol present. Very creamy and thick body. The cellared editions are better though this wasnt bad at all.

Bottle: Poured a reddish brown with a creamy off white head. Sweet fruits, malts, and spices. Taste is dark fruits, a dash of spice, and nice sugary finish. The finish is a bit on the alcohol side, but reminds the tongue of warming sensations.

Last beer of 2008, Bottle, 2008 vintage pours a deep red with a very creamy looking off white head. Very pungent, can smell it from a foot away. Lots of raisin and cinnamon, like a good loaf of bread. Candy sugar is also present as well as what smells like faint malt. Flavors are sweet and spicy, honey, clove, cinnamon and pepper in the finish. Long lingering finish with a nice alcohol burn. The carbonation is moderate to high. The finish is fantastic, lots of complex flavors that melt into the mouth for a minute after you swallow. I really can’t wait to get the 09 and the 2010 and do a vertical on Christmas to see how well this ages. Happy New Years Ratebeerians!

Brown, clear body; tan head. Strong, sweet, fruity, spicy aroma. Rich dark fruit flavor, sugary, semi-dry, faintly spicy. Feels a bit bubbly in the mouth then warming as it goes down. Nice lingering semi-dry sweetness. The strong alcohol is apparent in the aftertaste.

old rating: 7/4/8/3/16 - 3.8. vintage 2008. grand cru of the emperor ABV 10%, so i am assuming that it is a 2003 vintage. pours a deep dark brown with a medium size tan head, heavy carbonation, and good lacing. smell is of cocoa, caramel, and dark fruits. taste is fizzy, then creamy, dark fruit, grapes, cocoa, malt, some sweetness, roasted nuts, ends sweet on the lips and slightly dry. overall emperor did not seem as carbonated as the blue.
