lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Nov 29, 2008 Bottle shared at a tasting. Pours dark maroon with a thin beige head. Smell is dark fruit, bubble gum and is slightly vinuous in the nose as well. Taste is dark fruit, winelike and semi dry in the finish with some belgian candi-sugar. Medium to thin body and lightly prickly carbonation. A touch boozy, and pretty nice for the style, though. trevor211 (499), Seattle, Washington, USA Nov 28, 2008 Pours a warm brown, with a thick but dissipating head. Spicy aroma - a *ton* of brown sugar on the nose. Sweet flavor, lively carbonation, with some dark fruits as well as the brown sugar dominating. Just a touch of tartness comes through, but it’s very much a dessert beer. Spices are prominent, too - a great holiday beer. michael-pollack (2598), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 27, 2008 750ml Bottle: Sweet, vinous aroma of grapes, light alcohol, dark ripe fruit, brown sugar, light molasses, raisin, slight toffee, some malts, and a hint of chocolate. Aroma is very complex. Poured brown/dark orange/dark amber in color with a small, fizzy, creamy, tan head that lasted throughout. Slightly hazy. Sparkling. Good lacing. Medium sweet flavor. Tastes of malts, toffee, dark ripe fruit, light alcohol, slight vanilla, raisin, brown sugar, slight oak, light chocolate, slight rum, and maple syrup. Medium body. Lightly thick, syrupy texture. Average to lively carbonation. Sweet, maple syrup, toffee, and alcohol finish lingers a long time. hobbersr (393), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Nov 26, 2008 2006 bottle. Pours a changing light to dark brown colour with no head. Aroma changes drastically (in a matter of minutes!). First a very floral smell then changes into molassas, yeast, sweetness I can’t put my finger on, some kind of exotic fruit (mango or papaya), raisins, very interesting! I’ve gotta try this. On the palate, molassas, raisins, cinnamon, bready yeast (tastes like raisin bread), hints of coffee and exotic fruits, touch of sourness on the finnish (in a pleasant way). Warms the palate and lingers pleasantly. espenra (277), Oslo, Norway Nov 19, 2008 75cl bottle. 2005 vintage. It poured a dark deep red, almost brown colour with a medium big beige head that settled down fast in the glass. It has a very fruity aroma that tastes of black berries, nuts, caramel and roasted malts. The flavour is slightly bitter and tastes of dark caramel, malts, nuts and dark berries. It has a short aftertaste.
Hank1980 (732), Athens, Georgia, USA Nov 18, 2008 Tap at Trappeze. Poured clear dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of dark fruit, sweet molases malt. Taste is fruit, malt, yeast, nut. Mouth is smooth. A solid brew. bellmyer (41), EAST MOLINE, Illinois, USA Nov 1, 2008 2008 vintage. Pour is deep brown with a big puffy off-white head that refuses to go away. Nice puffy cloud. Aroma is fruity but dark. Taste is complex with a warming alcohol hello. Malty yet sweet. Solid brew. Allen (1282), Switzerland Oct 31, 2008 Updated: Jul 7, 2009Vintage 2006. It pours a nut-brown beer with a small beige head. The nose is of figs, vitamin tablets, raisins, molasses, nutmeg and plum. Rather sweet and fruity. Quite a lot of molasses and apples in the taste. Both malty and yeasty - nicely balanced. It reminds me a bit of ’’Uniebroue la Terrible’’. Pleasantly woody. Notes of walnuts, vitamin tablets and figs showing up. Slightly lactic. Not much lacework. Full bodied. Sweet. Some alcohol appearing with the swallow. The finish is surprisingly good and quite yeasty with hints of rasins and mince pies. Pleasant, but definetely not a wonderful beer in my opinion. I don’t share the same taste as Charles the fifth. But I agree on his following quote by the way: ’’Paris is not a city, but a universe’’. Thanks a lot bov for this beer!
