MaltDawg (778), Richmond, Virginia, USA Jul 30, 2008 2007 750ml courtesy of Butters. Big malty nose with belgian bubblegum fruit and spiceyness. Mostly clear ruby brown with almost no head. dark fruits, bubblegum and peppery hop flavors. Full body with moderate carbonation and some sweet sherry like overtones in the finish. very complex and good. MuttyD (93), Cambridge, USA Jul 29, 2008 Brown/red color with foamy white head. Aroma is of bananas, yeast, and other fruits. Huge, huge sweetness. Brown sugar, dark fruits, and spice dominate this brew. Very syrupy and alcoholic, but still an excellent Belgian Strong Ale. TheEpeeist (1427), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 29, 2008 25.4 oz bottle, 2006. Dark crimson brown with a pocked ivory head. Nose is caramel, grape soda and wood. Smooth and soft with a tingle. Taste is sweet berries and grape; kind of like a sherry. Dry finish with a touch of bitter chocolate. This paired nicely with some Morbier. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Jul 27, 2008 Vintage 2007. Pours clear mahogany with garnet highlights and miniscule tan head. Nose of banana bubblegum, caramel, raisin, anise, molassis, peat, and just the smallest twinge of alcohol. Flavor of anise, sweet caramel and alcohol. Medium chewy body with low carbonation. Warming in the finish but not hot. Very enjoyable for such high abv and good pricepoint. beerbastard (94), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jul 25, 2008 2008 750ml. Nice looking redish brown. Good head, laced my glass well. Fruity nose, enjoyable palate. Very very brown sugar flavor at first. After it came up to temp. the flavors blended better. Very Belgium. Clean finish. BoBoChamp (1334), Gent, Belgium Jul 22, 2008 75cl, brew Anno 2008, from De Hopduvel Gent, complex, heavy, yet balanced, clear, good head, very good brew, the best of the Gouden Carolus range LinusStick (1830), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 15, 2008 Blah. This is a typical over the top hot Belgian beer. Probably would be a lot better with a year or two on it. Aroma was huge. Vinuous backbone with sweet caramel malt and alcohol jumping out. Pour was a decent murky brown with no bubbles and a one finger tan head. Taste was too hot and strong. Strong Vicks Vapo-Rub, caramel malt intertwined with hot alcohol and little carbonation. daniellerose7 (119), new york, New York, USA Jul 14, 2008 This beer rocks. It’s got everything a strong, brown ale should have. The right balance of flavor, alcohol, sweetness and body that makes a Belgian strong ale totally drinkable.
