dunkpigen (328), Kolding, Denmark Jul 13, 2008 Bottles at Århus Ølfestival 2008 (tastet at the same time). 2008 version: Pours a nice dark ruby red with almost no head. Aroma is vinious, fruity aswell as the flavour, but here it is a bit to vinious (7, 4, 7, 3, 16 - 3,7).
2004 version: Pours a nice dark ruby red with almost no head. Aroma of wonderful plum, vinious and caramel. Nice balanced flavour and body with plum, caramel and viniousity (8, 4, 9. 4, 18 - 4,3) NachlamSie (1630), Tennessee, USA Jul 11, 2008 750ml 2007 bottle, best before March 28, 2017. Pours murky dark brown with virtually no head in a Trappist glass. Lacing is sparse, but clingy. The aroma is sweet and fruity, very well balanced, and quite strong. Notes of berries, coriander, grape are all apparent. It’s quite juicy and devoid of any alcohol burn in the nose. Mouthfeel is lively and prickly with a sticky fig sweetness highlighted by spiced notes. Some earth, grape, graham crackers, berries, and a little heat are found in the complex flavor. I really enjoy the way this one comes together. maniac4016 (114), bill clinton, Iceland Jul 6, 2008 like this about as much as getting ass-raped in a turkish prison, smells of sweatty arm-pits & turkish cheese, hope the fucking whores of turkey smell better than this vile creation, fuck them in the ass if they dont KnN (712), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Jul 6, 2008 Wasn’t sure what to expect here. Poured a deep ruby/brown color with a fairly small white head. Initial aroma was almost pure cherries, my wife said it reminded her of cherry cough syrup. The flavor was more complex than that though. The cherries were certainly at the forefront, but there were hints or raisins, sugar, malt, and just the barest hop hint. This was a fun one to taste just because of all the different flavors that made themselves apparent throughout the beer. douglas88 (1555), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Jul 5, 2008 Updated: Jul 7, 20082006 bottle shared by Eric, thanks man. Pours a mahogany color, with a small white head. The aroma is full of banana and sugar notes, some funk in there too. The taste was very nice; a sweet malty body with some fruity, almost strawberry aspects. Very smooth and full mouthfeel. An excellent beer. A high level Belgian, and that is saying something for sure. JB175 (1654), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 30, 2008 2006 bottle. Darker brown pour with a smallish head in a "Grand Cru of the Emperor" official glass. Wonderful sweet aroma of brown sugar, molasses, figs, raisins, cherries, and pastries. Flavor is pleasantly sweet with brown sugar and syrup, ripe vinous fruits (mostly cherry and raisin), candy, and cakes with a light hop bite left over. A stunner on the palate with light carbonation, a sweet sting, and the slightest bite. Wonderful. I think this matches Rochefort 10 and Westy 12 as one of my favorite non-sour Belgian beers. Wonderful! Snojerk321 (1914), San Diego, California, USA Jun 30, 2008 750ml bottle (2007) shared with my buddy Blake. Pours a deep dark brown with a ruby hue. Light lacing was left on the tulip glass. Tons of candied fruit, cocoa dust and red vines? on the nose. Flavor was dominate with candied dark fruits (plums, raisins, black cherry), molasses and brown sugar. This is in my top 5 for Belgian Strong Ales for sure. onlyrocknroll (218), Cork, Ireland Jun 29, 2008 2008 bottle- Dark murky brown with a medium head. Very complex interesting aroma, sweet, a lot of dark fruit, espicially raisins, some toasted malt and molasses. Caramel sweet flavour initially, plums and molasses. Finishes with some pronounced but mellow spice and a lot of malt sweetness. The alcohol is evident throughout but low key. Complex and understated.
