Meatmallet (120), Salem, Illinois, USA Apr 30, 2008 Dark reddish brown color with a thick head that that quickly dissipates. Heavier alcohol smell than I was expecting but was not bad. Also smells of yeast, rasins, and spices. Taste is sweet with a bit of alcohol burn at the end. A heavy malt taste with fig and rasins. Feels good in the mouth with the right ammount of carbonation. Scauca (408), Lovere, Italy Apr 28, 2008 Inscrutable dark and thick, with a fast vanishing head. The aroma is rich, sweet, full of dried fruits such as figs, dates, plums, with a little yeasty spiciness and some ethylic traces. Full bodied, sweet, almost sirupy, definitely a sipping beer. Lothore (276), California, USA Apr 26, 2008 A- Pours a deep, dark reddish hue with a nice little eggshell white head which stays on top of this brew for quite a while.
S- Smell is dominated by a sweet banana character which kind of dominates the nose but lying behind it are spices and a yeasty distinctly belgian character to it.
T- Taste is super sweet at the begining, dark yet fruity sustained by a deep malt breadiness which leads into an alcohol warming. The alcohol is covered up masterfully. Not my usual beer but it is making me reconsider the Belgian Strong Dark Ale Style.
M- Thick and creamy with a just the right amount of carbonation bite at the end.
D- I really wanted to not like this beer. I often find myself not liking a lot of Belgian beers unless they are done really well ... and this one is. That being said it is going to be hard for me to finish this whole bottle, I think sipping on one glass is awesome though.
Beerlando (2281), Orlando, Florida, USA Apr 26, 2008 2005 vintage. Pours a dark, brownish plummy color. A compact, foamy beige head leaves nice clumps of lace behind. The nose shows copious amounts of dark fruit, primarily fig, raison, and prune. Sweetness just flows from this thing, with the alcohol soaked fruits being accompanied by dark caramel and some brown sugar. An indiscernible dark spiciness is present as well. Flavors are very similar, with huge, sweet dark fruits and sweet caramel making for a heavy, sugary, dessert-like drink. Thick and syrupy, the body goes down smooth enough but sits heavy in the stomach. A few ounces of this is a nice, occassional treat, but it is just too sweet for me. drfabulous (1212), Columbia, Missouri, USA Apr 23, 2008 Updated: Oct 9, 2008Poured a huge head. Lots of caramel in the first taste. The aroma seems the same as the "normal" Gouden Carolus. Lots of malt and sweetness (figs, plumbs). I love it, but is it all that different from the regular one? I might need a side by side. Or I should drink the red soon after I finish this one for further comparison. I am tasting the 2008 bottle. Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Apr 22, 2008 On tap at Hamilton’s. Pours hazy copper with thin off white head. The aroma is simply huge with raisins, prunes, figs and coriander spice. Big fruity aroma. The taste is similar with a pulse of Belgian yeast up front along with a load of figs, dates and raisins. The spiciness builds toward the finish along with malty sweetness, a hint of lemon tartness and more fruity esters. Huge tasty brew packed with flavor. rustychiles (997), Mesa, Arizona, USA Apr 19, 2008 2007 750ML Corked Bottle.
Pours a deep caramel brown with a medium off white head. Aroma of Fruit, Yeast, Rasins, Caramel and Spices. Flavor is rasin, yeast, malt, lots of fruity notes and sweetness in this one. Mouthfeel is delightful as well. Try this one if you haven’t yet it’s worth it. tbag5557 (14), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA Apr 14, 2008 2005, Consumed in 2008. Caramel color, with biege head. Nice nose, smells of Port, and assorted dried fruit(apricot?). Still very sweet, but also very nice. Honey and raison being the dominating flavors, but much more to it, quite complex, and balanced. Nice session brew, better shared, can be slightly overwhelming after a while, but overall good.
