AgentSteve (1334), SF Bay Area, California, USA Apr 10, 2008 Beautiful pour of deep prune brown with a thin, tan halo of a head. Aroma and flavor are parallel, with dried fruits, caramel, and a bit of alcohol that is quite warming. Vas19 (293), Maryland, USA Apr 9, 2008 2006 bottle thanks to DocHop: Pours hazy brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma is a delicious combination of raisin, pear, plum, and a bit of alcohol. Flavor is a bunch of dark fruit and caramel with a bit of wine. Very smooth. A little bit of earthy alcohol on the finish. Really good beer. DocHop (278), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Apr 9, 2008 2006: Pours a very dark amber, caramel color with a medium tan head that diminishes quickly. Wonderful aroma of caramel, raisons, belgian yeast, and wine/grapes. Immediate taste of raisons, plums, and sweet malts. Has a great caramel spiciness with a somewhat dry, merlot/wine like finish. Hides the alcohol well behind a superbly smooth and creamy body. Blom (390), Odense, Denmark Apr 6, 2008 [Vintage 2005, sampled 2008]. Dark brown with a low head. Exciting aroma of dark dried fruits and port. At this point the beer is still very sweet and dominated by syrup, honey, oak, basement, candy and raisins. In small amounts it is quite complex and exciting but more than one glass quickly gets nauseating, due to the sticky sweetness. bobaidan (358), Farmington, Connecticut, USA Apr 1, 2008 Poured dark brown with almost no head. Aroma is strong with alcohol, overly ripe fruit (mostly cherry) and a bit of caramel. Mouthfeel is sticky and flat. Flavor is strong, with dried fruit, yeast and alcohol dominating. This could really use some more carbonation and complexity. for such a highly rated beer, I was a bit dissapointed. Bad bottle perhaps ? gotbeach (128), San Diego, California, USA Apr 1, 2008 Pours dark with a diminishing tan head. Sweet malt, yeast aroma. Warm, sweet raisen and prunes...nice. andyhite (290), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Mar 29, 2008 750ml, pours similar to that of a tawny port, but with influences of a thin brown ale. the head disappeared quicker than a fat kid in dodgeball, but it still glows in the amber light of my abode. the aromas carry a grape dominance accented by peppermint, anise, spicy passion fruit, and ripened berries. it smells very fresh yet rich. the taste is smooth, as carbonation is minimal, thus allowing the richness and depth of the ale move to the forefront. it honestly drinks like that of a good syrah. cola, alcohol, raisins, cherry pits, and maple all show on the palate, giving way to a heated finish. tis indeed a treat, and should come with two glasses to share with a friend. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Mar 27, 2008 07 bottle shared by Crosling. Poured a deep caramel color with a thin beige head. Aroma of plum, raisin, fig, some yeast, and light alcohol. Sweet caramel entry with a light tart character and nice fruit flavor including plum and raisin and a nice yeastiness on the finish with some alcohol. Smooth and slick on the palate. Very nice, but as Nick said, somewhat young. Still a treat. Thanks Nick.
