Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

Poured dark brown with almost no head. Aroma is strong with alcohol, overly ripe fruit (mostly cherry) and a bit of caramel. Mouthfeel is sticky and flat. Flavor is strong, with dried fruit, yeast and alcohol dominating. This could really use some more carbonation and complexity. for such a highly rated beer, I was a bit dissapointed. Bad bottle perhaps ?

750ml, pours similar to that of a tawny port, but with influences of a thin brown ale. the head disappeared quicker than a fat kid in dodgeball, but it still glows in the amber light of my abode. the aromas carry a grape dominance accented by peppermint, anise, spicy passion fruit, and ripened berries. it smells very fresh yet rich. the taste is smooth, as carbonation is minimal, thus allowing the richness and depth of the ale move to the forefront. it honestly drinks like that of a good syrah. cola, alcohol, raisins, cherry pits, and maple all show on the palate, giving way to a heated finish. tis indeed a treat, and should come with two glasses to share with a friend.

07 bottle shared by Crosling. Poured a deep caramel color with a thin beige head. Aroma of plum, raisin, fig, some yeast, and light alcohol. Sweet caramel entry with a light tart character and nice fruit flavor including plum and raisin and a nice yeastiness on the finish with some alcohol. Smooth and slick on the palate. Very nice, but as Nick said, somewhat young. Still a treat. Thanks Nick.

2006 Vintage. Cloudy, reddish brown appearance with a small beige head and decent lacing. Lovely aroma of soft fruit, yeast, caramel and licorice. Rich, complex flavor full of ripe fruit, sweet malts, toffee, spices and a light touch of alcohol. Smooth, full bodied, modestly carbonated mouthfeel. Sweet, long lasting finish. Absolutely delightful.

2007 bottle. Aroma: yeasty, caramel, brown sugar. Dark brown colour with tan head that disappears quickly. Sweet, bubbly, warm blend of fruity raisin, caramel and brown sugar softens the high alcohol content nicely until you try to stand up. Very clean aftertaste.

750 ml bottle, RBNAG07. Dark brown. Tall beige fluffy head that clings to the glass. Strong dry Belgian yeast aroma. Strong banana aroma. Rich and sweet malt flavours. Smooth texture. High carbonation. Chocolate flavours with a note of caramel. Great beer.
