rfox3 (3), Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA does not count Nov 3, 2007 Bottled. Poured dark with slight red hue with cream head. Very nice, complex aroma to match its taste. heavy (802), Split, Croatia Oct 30, 2007 27/10 Since I’ve tried Ambrio, my first Het Anker beer I always wanted to find this, the top product of my favorite commercial brewery. And here I am at Hopdevil in company of Doggythedog who is already killing me why I didn’t ordered it before (sorry :) ) And here it comes, the crown of the night and whole my visit to Zagreb... the familiar 0.75 l bottle, 2006 vintage, which poured deep reddish brown body with medium brownish head (tulip glass). Aroma is very nice, sweetish, malt dominated with caramel and some fresh coffee. Flavor quite sweet too, at first quite ordinary, with every other sip revealing its special fantastic and quite complex character. Very full bodied, there are lot of things in there, fruitiness, chocolate, caramel, coffee a bit...everything in a nice order, really a masterpiece. Like a real meal, as we have been kidding. Alcohol is felt but not very much. Finish is pleasantly sweet, not too much, quite simple but great. Wonderful beer, leaving a big smile and warm soul. Pastor (509), Maine, USA Oct 28, 2007 2006 vintage, 750ml bottle Poured a wonderful burgundy color with a slight white head . Aromas of wine fresh bread and malts . Medium-bodied and slight carbonation . This Ale drinks like a cognac . Big fruity flavors along with some malty sweetness but not overly sweet .This bottle was a well balanced.
I will enjoy this Ale watching the Red Sox’s tonight nomatter what the outcome (Go Sox’s) Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA Oct 28, 2007 Rating #400. 2006 Vintage; 10 % ABV. Pours a hazy reddish brown with a couple fingers of creamy beige head that diminishes to a thin cap and leaves creamy lace sliding down the glass. The aroma is delicious: banana bread dough, milk chocolate, caramel, cherries, raisin, cloves, and a faint alcohol. Medium-bodied and silky/soft with a mildly vinous/dry finish and a touch of alcohol warmth. The flavor is of raisins, chocolate, cherries, red wine, and a faint alcohol note at the end. If it were just a tad less sweet this beer would be practically perfect. As it stands, it’s just very, very good. ;) Doggythedog (1541), Split, Croatia Oct 27, 2007 2006 vintage, 750ml bottle shared with heavy whom I thank for ordering this at the Hopdevil. The strongest, the best rated beer from what could be my favorite non-trappist belgian brewery. I came with great expectations. Poureed a lovely dark deep red colour with a creamy off white head that went away at a medium pace. The nose showed some of the complexity this beer possesses. Chocolate, malt, raisins, a touch of coffee machine coffee, caramel and alcohol.... The taste was sweet, pleasant and complex. Malt, a touch of brittle, sweet, chocolatey, some typical belgian yeastiness, caramel, tobacco, fruity, bananas dipped in sugar and then covered by chocolate, coffee and caramel again and... green tea? (was I hallucinating?). Dryish bittersweet finish. Yup, a great beer. Didn’t strike me as the best that Het Anker does, but the best they do is stellar, and this isn’t far away. chimay67 (30), hunt sta, New York, USA Oct 18, 2007 2006 vintage, caged 750. Malty, vinious, little head that quickly dissipates. Big fruity flavors up front, alcohol in the middle, malt in the finish. No discernable hop notes. Just big, fruity and malty. Het Anker continues to do a solid job with this big boy. JCB (1713), Durham, North Carolina, USA Oct 17, 2007 2006 bottle, tasting mighty fine these days. This has always been one of my fave grand crus, for its rich and full palate, for the beautiful pour with the billowy biscuit head atop the dark copper body, and of course for the flavors. Certainly it’s malt-a-licious, but the dominant flavors are raisins/prunes with a slight tartness giving it balance and complexity. Will no doubt be better with age, but it’s lovely as is. hapjydeuce (763), Del Mar, California, USA Oct 9, 2007 Bottled, 2006 vintage. Pours hazy mahogany brown with a minimal fizzy head that settles into fine lacing. Aroma of raisins and banana dominate, with a hearty malt background. Sweet Belgian candy sugar is also noticeable. Flavor is quite smooth, mostly raisin, plum and dark fruits, with some sherry/port flavors. Finishes with a tingly palate, but the alcohol could be more balanced. Good beer to age for another couple of years.
