Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

Copper / rubis slightly murky poor with almost no head. Aromas of dates, whicky barrel, candy sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, grapes, red licorice and prunes......... Very evolutive aromas ... Very impressive flavors as well including prunes, cherries, brown sugar, caramel... and the list goes on.... Full bodied brew with an extremely well balanced mouthfeel. Top notch brew... 750 ml bottle. a deep red/brown beer with a very small and disappearing head. The aroma is malty with fruity notes (plums) and a touch of alcohol. The flavour is very sweet and fruity with warming alcohol and a character that is both vinous and strong sweet wineish. Full bodied, almost no bitterness. A very good beer that gains after every sip.

big bottle 2006, 10%. Dark amber/brown with off-white head. Aromas of ripe plum and fig. Tastes of spice, bananas, caramel, brown sugar, more dark fruits...wow. Heavy, will likely age quite well, but who can wait?

Bottle at Moeder Lambic. 2005. Deep red/brown with lasting beige head. Good up front toffee and herb/spice. Lovely soft big and drinkable. Kind of minty on end, which is refreshing.

Bottle. Pours a deep amber/mahogany with ruby edging. Full head with plenty of lacing. Warm, malt aroma with notes of amaretto and anise. Effervescent and medium to full bodied but not heavy or syrupy. Has an almost creamy texture. Toasted malt, alcohol and caramelized sugar dominate the flavor profile. Layers of toffee, dark fruit, cherry, banana, caramel and chocolate follow. Hints of fusel alcohol as it gets warm. On par with the best Belgian ales.

Bottle, jaargang 2006 (10%). Aroma of dark fruit, with a hint of vanilla. Deep reddish, ripe stone fruit color; the white head ringed immediately. Full bodied; mild, near creamy, carbonation. The flavor is non-sticky dark ripe fruits, with a bit of banana. The alcohol is detectable, but it does not interfere. The finish is relatively dry, something like dark cherry skins, and very, very smooth. Sips something like a decent port. Not at all harsh. Perhaps there is some floral hop. Really quite marvelous.
