drjay44 (757), Salida, Colorado, USA Aug 20, 2009 750 ml. bottle. Vintage 2008. 11% ABV. Pours a thin yellow white head over a clear reddish amber (SRM 20) body.....nose is of plum pudding with currents/raisins, dried cherry, plum, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, molasses....taste initially is a bit of malt, then the aforementiond dried fruits barge through bringing major sweetness, finishing with a mild dry ending. Mouth feel is remarkably light, carbonation makes for a creamy richness. I do love the great Belgian Strong Ales. minch25 (346), Columbus, Ohio, USA Aug 19, 2009 Dark red brown, thin head. Rich malty aroma, alcohol, grape juice, jam. Very strong rich flavor, yet rather deft and carbonated texture. Tastes like wine. Something very savory in the flavor, raisins. Well made, hits the spot, holds its own compared to similar Westy/Rochefort offerings. Quite the heavyweight and very satisfying. Why can’t Trois Pistoles be this good? PilsnerPeter (2585), Flushing, New York, USA Aug 18, 2009 Bottle: 2004 thanks Mike (Eyedrinkale): Ruby purplish with a tannish head. Sweet aroma- quite sugary with candyish Belgian malt giving off honey, plum and candy sugar. Slick body and sweet flavor- rich and candy-like with honey plum character and some old notes of paper and rotted fig. A bit past it’s prime, but still a rounded rich Belgian Strong. Pinball (2685), Allerød, Denmark Aug 17, 2009 75cl bottle 2008 version, shared with gf on her birthday in rhodes, greece. found in a carrefour supermarket @ 10 eur.
appears clear brown, huge smooth thick light brown head.
spicy aroma, nuts, dark fruits, raisins.well blended aroma, hard to take the various aromas out of the very pleasant whole.
flavor is sweet malty, licorice, dark fruits, fresh raisins, alc, caramel, vanilla, cardemom, cherries, banana. Flavor is definetly best at room temperature, beer got more and more body and varied flavours as it warmed up. drowland (1337), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 16, 2009 Had this at the Hopleaf in Chicago. Delicious! Dominant prune flavor... loved this beer! MarinaMarket (31), Washington, USA Aug 14, 2009 2006...yummy! A little more carbonated than it should be I think...cork just blew out and richochetted off the ceiling...no idea where it is now. Great beer as you all know. Frothy head, larger bubbles than expected, and tremendous flavor. Out of the bottle @ 63F. What can I say, I have cases of it! :D WhatNewinBooze (15), Centennial, Colorado, USA Aug 11, 2009 Every year on the 24th of February Gouden Carolus brews the Cuvee de Keizer Blauw, or "Grand Cru of the Emperor" to celebrate the birthday of Charles V. The Cuvee de Keizer is brewed uniquely with only fine Belgium hops and with it being 11% ALC/VOL. this beer will age extremely well over the next several years with a complexity and intensity usually reserved for only the finest wines. This beer pours with a deep caramel color and golden tan head with aromas plums, raisins and wood leaping out of the glass. The palate starts of with sweet caramel that soon gives way to fruity flavors of figs and plums with a slight tart quality. The finish is long and mouth filling as the Belgium hops flex their muscles making it both sweet and bitter at the same time. It is still a little young so if you can keep your hands off of it the 2008 Cuvee de Keizer will only continue to develop over the next couple of years. What a treat! italarican (157), Astoria, New York, USA Aug 9, 2009 Much thanks to the Queens RB crew! 2004 bottle. Pours a lovely ruby red with a brownish tint. Intense aroma of bourbon, vanilla, and caramel. I can feel it in the eyes as I take in the bouquet; I presume this will be strong. Actually, it was much smoother than expected. Flavors of brown sugar, honey, and Werthers Original candy. Quite sweet with a surprisingly quickly fading finish. It teases you into thinking it will sting your throat but pulls back and gives you a boozy candy treat instead.
