emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jul 1, 2007 Poured a dark reddish brown, not quite the consistency I would expect from a Belgian but not in a bad way. The head is medium, thin, and light brown. The aroma is a tad sour, dark fruits abound, along with molasses, and dark sugars, alcohol, dry vinous quality. The flavor is also dark fruit, alcohol, dark sugar, sweet, caramel. The palate is very dry and sweet. Lacked the sour earthiness of most Belgians but was delicious nonetheless. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jul 1, 2007 The color was amber/red. The head was thick, creamy, and light beige. The aroma was sweet, belgian yeast, and alcohol. The flavor was sweet at first then brought a dryness. There was also alcohol, and fermented fruit. The palate was smooth. The finish was sweet/dry and warm. hopslovin (180), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Jun 28, 2007 Dark cider pour with slight head. Raisans and sweet malt on the nose. Sweet Port flavor, nice and smooth. Slight heat in the finish, but overall the 11% ABV is well hidden. Outstanding. jeremytoni (1067), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Jun 28, 2007 2006 vintage from bottle pours a dark amber almost brown with very little head. Nothing really stood out on this one, standard belgian strong ale. WeeHeavySD (2932), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jun 26, 2007 2006 vintage. 750 ml bottle courtesy of bikesandbeer, coincidentally shared with bikesandbeer. Pours reddish brown with a big 3 finger puffy tan head, sits nicely in my duvel tulip. Nose is big and has lots in it but not sure what but good. Very nice sweet big Belgian sweetness and taste. very tasty and rich, good beer thanks for the share Kev. IrishBoy (2685), Bakersfield, California, USA Jun 22, 2007 2006 750ml Bottle from Ledgers; Nose of vanilla, caramel, cherries, and a molasses note; dark cherry brown with a big tan head; flavor of cherries, raisins, peppery spiciness, caramel and some sweetness; Very excellent BSA! probstk (1005), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Jun 21, 2007 750 mL bottle of 2006 vintage via Lubiere, served at cellar temp. in a tulip glass.
App.: DEEP ruby, clear, large-ish, rocky beige head.
Aroma: Tons of fruit – dried dark fruits, cherries, figs, other stone fruits; molasses and licorice, exceedingly sweet nose; spicy from the alcohol; light minty-rootbeer quality.
Palate: Thick and syrupy (as nose would suggest), soft effervescence, sticky.
Flav.: Piles of gooey, chewy, thick malts; very fruity (the dried fruits and cherries) and sugary but also some roasted malts; Molasses and minty licorice; on swallowing, I’m left with dried apricots and a slight alcohol burn.
This Van de Keizer chap is OK by me!
shintriad (698), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 21, 2007 I was put off by the slightly metallic taste of this one, which was almost too up-front. However, for a Belgian ale, I’m amazed at how rich and malty this beer came out. Lots of sweet plum in there, and woodsy flavours. Great success!
