Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

As Grand Cru of the Emperor. 2006 bottle. Dark brown color, with nice small, but thick head. Aroma is full of figs, and other non-descript fruit. Flavor is that of malts, figs, raisins, and a strong warm alcohol feel. I will be on the lookout for older vintages of this beer.

Bottle (2001, 2004 & 2005). Dark brown colour with a large tan head. Yeasty aroma with figs, chocolate & citrus fruits. Sticky alcoholic flavour, sweet and fruity. The less alcoholic 2001 bottle was the tastiest.

2006, Nut brown color with small head and no lacing. Aroma was strong with nice fruitiness. Nice flavor, with some malt, but a little too much raisin and sourness. Simple, but good overall.

2002 Bottle. Hazy Orange brown with a big creamy tan head. Complex earthy aroma with notes of spice, yeast, and dried fruit. Big sweet malt backbone with some spice. Some liquorice in the finish. Very little carbonation. Age has treated this beer nicely!

750 ml bottle (2006 version) poured into tulip glass. Color was a dark burgundy to brownish color. Sweet aroma of fruits and alcohol. AFor the most part tasted like it smelt (fruits and alcohol). A nice one to sip with friends who can appreciate a good Belgian ale. Can’t wait to try the 2005 bottle I have aging Edit::I have now had the 2005 edition and it was amazing. My all time favorite

Nice brown colour with a light brownish head. Great sweet aroma of fruits (raisins) and nuts, which one very much also tastes in the flavour along with strong malt, spices, caramel and a good warmness from the alc. Exellent beer!

750 ml bottle (2006 vintage). Beautiful deep ruby red body with a tiny beige head. Aroma of sweet malt, dry fig, wood and alcohol. Flavor is syrup, dry fruit, roasted malt, caramel and alcohol. This is a full bodied and very flavorful beer. It’s complex, very sweet and lots of alcohol, and believe this alcohol is essential to balance the sweetness. A great beer, but I’m looking forward to sample my 2005 vintage from my cellar. I believe aging is a good thing for this beer.

Always one of my favorites. I purchase this beer more often than any other. Best aged 9 months or more. Rated at the12 hour Belgian beer partyin Carlsbad, CA. Possibly the best beer tasting ever, with 70 bottled rare and expensive beers and 20 on draft.
