Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

Clear beautiful dark reddish copper color, big lasting tan head. Sweet, slight roasted, lactic, alcohol, spicy scent. Also some milk chocolate. Sweet, lactic, salty, phenolic, licorice, fruity, hard to describe taste. Lots of everything. Warming alcohol feeling, though well hidden alcohol in taste. Aftertaste rather short, a bit sweet. Medium to smooth mouthfeel, low bitterness. Turns shady towards the end of the bottle.

The 11% I tried now (Side by side with the red version) was much better than the 8.5% version tried earlier)

Pours hazy red/brown with grey/green lines. Vineous, dried fruit aroma with alcohol. Wet soil and cellar. Apricots and raisins, allmond and fudge. Ripe cherries. Stale sweet flavour, ripe bananas, with dried dark fruits and raisin. Allmond paste. Small chocolate hints.

Sweet fruit, cherrys, dates, bananas in the nose. Banana bread and some kind of raisiny taste. Ever so slightly tart. Feels thick on the tongue. Lovely finish. Lots of esters and warm alcohol. Wow....great beer.

Semi-translucent and honey chestnut in color with a thick, oily film on top. Fried bananas with cocoa nibs capture the nose, shortly followed thereafter by cinnamon, nutmeg, golden figs, banana butter and crusty, brown sugared crčme brulee. Full-flavored cocoa-covered banana chips ring favorably with melting ginger and peppered maple nougats. Warming, toasted pumpernickel is enhanced with beaucoup spicing. Glossy and oily mouth feel with a dry, earthen ash complex to mix the spicing up a bit. Chewy cocoa bread, ginger, nutmeg and melting bananas hug the back of the tongue. Gummy sweetness and a dry, hot recess become more prominent the further we go. Pepper jives with plum butter and prunes take a bath in hot caramel for the finish.

This tasting second big surprise. Bottled 2005 (11%), color was very mahogany and dark. Head was impressive creamy like and long lasting. Complexity is amazing, but predominant notes are raisin, date’s, fig with some licorice and maybe even coffee and Tobago notes. Flavor is full sweet with light bitter notes. Finish is surprisingly short, but still this was for me a great encounter. Love to re-taste this beer. Would like to try and cellar this beer for some years to see the difference and how it would evolve into something even grater if that is possible..... :-)
