Poured out a deep brown with red hues, small quickly dying tan head with zero retention - maybe a more aggressive pour should have been done? The aroma of sweet spice and caramel hits you quickly, sweet raisin, weak wood, hints of alcohol, faint cinnamon candy, licorice - reminds me of an eisbock. The taste is spicy but very easy drinking, allspice, clove, some alcohol, the spice really comes out as this warms and the caramel character tries to tame it but cannot. Slightly syrupy, nice soft carbonation and some alcohol as I breathe in. Surprisingly mellow young, we will see what this ages. See you in another year or so. NDbeerdrinker (164), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Jun 26, 2009 Pours a light brown with a thin head. Aroma is yeast, dark fruits, cherry twizzlers. Sweet maltiness in the taste, some caramel, cherries, and some toffee. This is complex and rich. walrussell (93), , Illinois, USA Jun 26, 2009 Dark brown - sweet, bitter, alcoholic flavor. Spicy with toffee fighting the bitter end. I like it, but it isn’t as easy drinking as I like. Still - interesting, and very good, especially if it isn’t your first beer of the night (it wasn’t for me). wimpie133 (126), Brugge, Belgium Jun 25, 2009 Bottle, 75 cl shared with parket. The beer looks very dark, but surprisingly also wears a rather clear dark red colour. There is a little foam that lasts however. The smell is something like old prunes, a bit sweet and light caramel. The taste is light sweet, not too, and also the prunes come back to the foreground. There is also a bit of a warming alcoholic taste at the end. The beer starts fantastic, but doesn’t stay the whole bear long fantastic, maybe because it doens’t have a big pallet. Anyway a very good beer, I think the best of the Gouden Carolus-series! Parket (214), Bruges, Belgium Jun 25, 2009 75 cl bottle (2008), dark reddish/brown colour and white/beige head. Smell of dried plums and another fruity touch. Taste: warming alcohol taste, also dried plums and other dried fruits, quite sugary but not too. This may be the best gouden carolus! Very nice beer! GadgetGeek (29), Snellville, Georgia, USA Jun 24, 2009 This is the 2008 vintage. This is one delicious beer. I will buy a case if I have the chance. Not too much head on this bottle, but a delicious malty, fruity, toffee tasting beverage. I will save half of the bottle for tomorrow.
