4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Reviewed 12/25/2012. 11.2 oz bottle (2011 vintage) into a Duvel tulip.
A: Pours a hazy dark brown color. The head is a one finger light cream color with nice texturing around the edge of the glass. Retention isnít that good, unfortunately, but lacing is attractive but sparse.
S: Thereís a strong aromatic bouquet of raspberries and chocolate, with underlying notes of cream, crisp pears, toffee, brown sugar, honey, and lavender. I really love inhaling this beer, thereís so much here to take in and enjoy.
T: Sweetness explodes on the tongue right from the get go - chocolate and malted milk balls dominate the palate initially. It sounds like this will be hella sweet. Luckily, this features the hallmark of most great BSDAs, that being impressive balance to help tie together the great flavors. Some earthy, flowery hops will try to nudge into the flavor profile midway through, while the finish is (balanced) alcohol, honey and tart dark fruits. The complexity is something you can really chew through and analyze while remaining a delicate, subtle suggestion.
M: As a nitpick, this beer sits a bit too heavily on the palate. Otherwise, itís a silky smooth beer thatís clean as a sheet, but with a great residual aftertaste. A little boozy, but nowhere near harsh on the palate. Not quite as carbonated as it seems initially - but maybe thatís because I let it rest for about 15 minutes.
O: Wonderfully crafted yet immensely enjoyable. Right up there in the same conversation as Rochefort 10 and St. Bernardus 12 in my mind.

An outstanding beer reminiscent of the best of the Trappists. Nice aroma with evident fruit and raisins. Pours cleanly, great white head. Lovely malt and chocolate highlights, a touch of maple sugar. Very well balanced. Lasts a goodly time on the palate. Drink it in a wide mouthed glass and it will serve you well.

2013 Bottle. Pours dark brown/red maple syrup with a medium sized tan frothy head. Nose of sweet booze, fruit, cake. Velvet mouth feel. Alcohol well hidden for something as potentially punchy. Tonnes of sweet ripe fruit providing a sweet and lightly sour malty notes. Milk chocolate. Lemon drop candies. Touches of figs, melons, toasted nuts and browned butter. Finish is toasty, and sweet yeasty bread. Surprisingly non-cloying for a very sweet beer.

Tasted from bottle. Pours a dark brown with thick beige head. Lots of lacing. Aroma is dark fruit like plums, dates and raisins along with some spices. A little bourbon like smell as well. Taste is moderate to heavily sweet with minimal bitterness. Lot of plum on the taste. Dark fruits, belgian yeast and some sherry like flavors. Interesting and very taste beer.

Very nice brown beer, with a beige head. Malty aroma, combined with plum and raisin accent. The alcohol is remarkably present in the taste which causes for a port- or sherry-like taste. There is also a taste of spices to detect. Unfortunately the bottle was already opened a while before I drank of it, which compromised the taste a bit, especially the aftertaste. Will rate this again in the right circumstances.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aroma is fruity - plum is the best description that I can come up with. The heavy alcohol is also apparent.
Color is a hazy dark brown. Head is slight.
Sweetness dominates the taste. Just a bit of bitterness.
Body is medium; texture is slick, with a bit of oil and very slight touch of cream. Carbonation is light to medium. Finish is sweet, plum and long.
Overall this is an interesting and quite different beer, especially with the sweet plum notes. Very good.
