COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

Reviewed 12/25/2012. 11.2 oz bottle (2011 vintage) into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a hazy dark brown color. The head is a one finger light cream color with nice texturing around the edge of the glass. Retention isnít that good, unfortunately, but lacing is attractive but sparse. S: Thereís a strong aromatic bouquet of raspberries and chocolate, with underlying notes of cream, crisp pears, toffee, brown sugar, honey, and lavender. I really love inhaling this beer, thereís so much here to take in and enjoy. T: Sweetness explodes on the tongue right from the get go - chocolate and malted milk balls dominate the palate initially. It sounds like this will be hella sweet. Luckily, this features the hallmark of most great BSDAs, that being impressive balance to help tie together the great flavors. Some earthy, flowery hops will try to nudge into the flavor profile midway through, while the finish is (balanced) alcohol, honey and tart dark fruits. The complexity is something you can really chew through and analyze while remaining a delicate, subtle suggestion. M: As a nitpick, this beer sits a bit too heavily on the palate. Otherwise, itís a silky smooth beer thatís clean as a sheet, but with a great residual aftertaste. A little boozy, but nowhere near harsh on the palate. Not quite as carbonated as it seems initially - but maybe thatís because I let it rest for about 15 minutes. O: Wonderfully crafted yet immensely enjoyable. Right up there in the same conversation as Rochefort 10 and St. Bernardus 12 in my mind.

2013 bottle. A fantastic Belgian strong ale that reminds me a lot to Chimay Bleue. Hazy dark brown color, amazing foam develops a huge crown. Complex aroma of burnt malts, raisins, molasses, prunes, mild chocolate and a bit of smoke. Taste is also complex with sweet notes offset by a shy nutty toastiness. Velvety texture and a long lasting aftertaste round up this marvel of a Belgian beer.

0.75 l bottle from Alko. Brown colour with big tan head. Well, there is no use of talking about malts and hops here, really. This is butterscotch, caramel, Coca cola tasting wine. Quite nice, but I would prefer a bit darker bewerage. Maybe I should have waited until 2020 or something. Donít get me wrong, this is a good one, but I just expected something more complicated.

2013 bottle shared with a buddy. This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a nice looking hazy to dark brown color hinging close to black. A light one finger white foamy head appeared and fell within about a minute leaving some sticky lacing running here and there. The smell had a a glossed over cinnamon to raisin - esque Belgian sticky sweetness. It didnít have as much spice as I was hoping it would have. The taste was mainly sweet with a light champagne to raisin aftertaste leading to a sweet sticky finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation seemed good for the style and for me. Overall, I say this was a pretty good Belgian Strong Ale. Iíd have it again.

Oh my goodness. Glass from a magnum from 2009. Boozy, dark fruit, sweet, candy sugar, apple and pear, lovely and rich. Xmas cake. So smooth and easy in spite of strength. Winter warmer.

Nice deep brown colour, rich in taste and aroma. At first a very smooth taste but a bit too alcoholic when the beer is going through your throat. A great beer for a winter evening, pure relaxation.

Bottle. Dark reddish brown with medium sized off white head. Very sweet malts, lots of peach, milk chocolate, wine gums, vanilla icecream, spices and some cognac. Full bodied and very nice creamy feel, with quite some alcohol presence. Good stuff!

Aroma of malt, caramel, plum, sweet fruits, hint of chocolate, candy sugar, spicy notes, raisins. Flavour is quite sweet, a bit too syrupy for me. Thick and full bodied. Nice ídessert beerí.

750 ml bottle
Brown to ruby red beer with blonde big head. Aroma has anise, Belgian yeast, sugar, toffee, dark fruits and raisin. Flavor has sugary and toffeey sweetness with raisin and dark fruits. Quite full palate with quite strong carbonation. Very little bitterness but long aftertaste with dark sugar, toffee, raisin and Belgian yeast. A nice sweet dessert beer for slow sipping, Alcohol does not come through at all.

Bottle from Hopduvel. Nutty brown, quite a decent head which lasts for a while. Nose is caramel, almond, hazlenut, alcohol, brown sugar, smells lovely. Taste is lots of caramel, hazle nuts, brown sugar, syrup, very sweet. Lovely beer, one of the best Belgian strongs.
