COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

750 ml cork bottle ‘2014 vintage’ opened with loud ‘pop’ bought at Craftissimo in Tsim Sha Tsui East.

Looks: Cloudy hazy deep ruby red colour with a layer of yeast sediments; Three-quarter finger head and light beige foam which last for 1 minute; Beautiful sticky lacing with active small carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant and sweet dark malt, with Brandy-like liquor, strong liquorices, strong plums, figs, sugar, spices, bread, strong Bel yeast and lemon.

Taste: Strong sweet dark malt, with strong caramel, light toffee, dark fruits, light red fruits, syrup, light spices, light bread, strong Bel yeast, lemon, light bitter hops and light grass.

Body: Full body. Oily, creamy and very slick palate.

Mouth feel: Solid dark maltyness in a thick and very smooth background. Strong caramel followed by pretty strong dark fruits and touches of red fruits. No apparent boozy taste so common with strong Belgian Dark, amazing! Syrupy sweet but in a nice, slightly nectar-ish manner. Yeasty with moderate lemon to round. Very nice!

Booze: Strong in Brandy-like aroma, the 11.0% alcohol is completely hidden in taste, even liquorices is very light. This is art!

Hoppiness: Spices and lemon in nose. Lemon and light grass in taste. Bitterness is moderately low for a lasting, fairly low astringent sweet malty finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry. Creamy, sweet and light bitter to mouth.

Comments: Compares to hard hitters like Chimay Blue, Piraat, Bush de Noël, etc., this one has the heavy liquor-ish attribute in aroma, yet surprisingly booze-less in taste, makes it very easy to drink if you dig the strong syrupy sweetness. Rather straight forward in taste but taster friendliness is the key. Excellent!

P.S.: What a way to celebrate my 1400th ratings!

2015 - Marrom avermelhado/rubi, média turbidez, espuma bege de boa formaçao e persistência, aspecto cremoso, acima do esperado. Aroma bastante maltado, uva passa, morangos, açucar queimado.

UPDATED: MAR 19, 2016 750ml 2011 bottle shared with Seb. Aroma: candied fruits, licorice, raisin. App: hazy brown, murky, minimal white head, little lacing. Taste and palate: full body, high sweetness. Overall: good stuff but so sweet. Wonder how this was a few years ago. Maybe it didn’t age so well.
