COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

700mL bottle from Sherbrooke Pours a deep dark brown with an average tan head that fades fairly quickly. Medium carbonation. Aroma is a complexity of spiciness, roast malt, and a slight yeasty whiff. Taste is perfectly smooth, a subtle mix of numerous flavours (black currant, plum fruitiness, strong sweet malt/chocolate/alcohol character, hint of yeast), that are extremely well balanced. Magnificent.

This beer, though unsuspecting at first, upon encountering the aftertaste turns out to be incredible. I’d describe it as a dark ale with an aftertaste of the best Jolly Rancher you’ll ever have.

UPDATED: JAN 8, 2014 Sipped from a nice stemmed chalice glass from Gouden Carolus at 60 degrees. This beer definitely improved as it warmed to room temperature. 2011 addition, so nicely aged. Initially smells of alcohol with a hint of red wine. Taste of dark grape, cherry, raisins, figs some alcohol burn and carbonation on the finish . Very sweet like a fine wine or a heavenly dessert. Best beer I?ve had yet. Have not tried a fresh batch yet so cannot speak for that.

Grandiosa cerveza, color obscuro, retención baja por la cantidad de alcohol, aromas intensos esteres frutales, notas a toffe, caramelo, melasa. Nuez, paladar completo..,

Charles V was one of the great monsters in history. He presided over several wars in Europe, imprisoned the Pope, and profited from the destruction of the Aztec empire and it’s people. This beer is every bit the monster that it’s namesake was. Even though the American craft/boutique brewers are able to match the flavor of this style with chemistry and biology, they have never been able to match the texture and body that the closely guarded techniques of the Belgian master brewers at Gouden Carolus had mastered 500 years ago. The perfect beer.

Deep color with a nose of dates, and brown sugar. Head doesn’t last long, which is common with this style. Incredible beer, fits the category and excels in flavor.

Delicious. Blueberry and not at all bitter. I wonder how it would taste if I'd kept it for ten years. Don't have that kind of patience though.
