Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

2005 vintage. Poured a really nice mahogany/red with a large head. Scents of cherries, chocolate and red wine, with similar tastes. Full body, with nice bitterness.

2005 bottle at gputty’s Friday tasting. Clear, dirty copper pour. Tan head. Nose is caramel and some spiciness, plus the slightest touch of mint. Lively, vinous mouthfeel, with flavors of caramel, toffee and an underlying spiciness. Lovely BSA!

2000 vintage, enjoyed on 4/6/06: Pours a medium brown with a reddish tint. Small, tan head that quickly fades. Aroma is toffee, candi sugar, figs and cinnamon. Flavor is semi sweet, candi sugar, dark fruits, bananas, light spice at the end. Mouthfeel is incredibly soft and smooth.

750ml bottle. Pours a clear brown/amber with a small tan head that fades to a ring and leaves good lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel, rum raisin, cherries, plums, and alcohol. Taste is the same as aroma but more intense. Medium full mouthfeel with a mild bitterness and a wonderfull alcohol warmth as it goes down. My favorite Gouden Carolus.

2008 750ml corked bottle. Pours a beautiful golden/red/brown with a very lively frothy beige head that produces excellent lacing and has wonderful retention. Aroma is sweet brown sugar and there is a bit of alcohol at the end, but what do you expect for an 11% beer? Flavor is of dark fruits and brown sugar and a touch of spice. The finish is a bit dry but I guess you could expect that. There is a touch of warming in the back of my throat as well. Mouthfeel is teetering on the syrupy side. This beer is wonderful.

2000 Deep reddish brown colour, with an average off white head. Full aroma, spicy, toffee, light roasted, very malty, with some alcoholic-yeasty hints. Full body, creamy texture, Finish is rather strong, spicy, alcoholic ending dry. THis is the top.

I consider this beer as the best of all beers from Het Anker. One of my best strong ales. Not the absolut emperor of Belgian labels, but surely one of them.
