Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

Pours dark brown with a bit of red with small to medium white head. Aroma is cherries, dark fruits, some vinous notes, bit of roastedness, small floral hints. Flavor is similar to roche 10, lots of cherry, dark fruits. bit of roast and belgian yeast. Roasted malt shows up most in the finish. Mouthfeel is smooth, touch of bitterness in the finish.

Luxury version of the famous Classic, brewed every year in February and bottled in 75 cl bottles with cork. Yellowish beige, regular, delicate and not very stable head, bronze colour. Aroma of candied fruits, cherries, Belgian chocolates, port wine, amaretto, maraschino, honey, marzipan, liquorice and in the beginning an ethereal spicy smell of cloves and aniseed. Candied cherries in the mouth, candi syrup, honey, deep caramelly maltiness, very vinous, port-like, drying in the finish due to the alcohol, even a little bit wry. Still a great beer with interesting ageing potential. Older versions were less strong, less spicy and closer to the old Gouden Carolus Classic; and should have had separate entries here.

75cl bottle at home. Dark brown with a medium off-white head with low retention. Full body with low carbonation. Sweet with herbal bitterness. Dark ripe fruits, raisins, caramel, brown sugar and warming alcohol. A complex quality brew.

Zo’n typische smaak dat sommige mensen dit heel lekker zullen vinden, maar het was niets voor mij

750mL corked bottle 2013 vintage BB 05/12/2023 Deep ruby body, bright edges, good dense creamy tan head persists. Dark Belgian candy sugar dominates the nose; earthy, treacle-y, burnt toffee with undertones of bitter chocolate combining with spicy dark fruits, port, clove, pepper & prunes. Very rich, alludes big alcohol without being hot or fusel, creamy carbonation, velvety smooth on the palate. Lots of dark, burnt sugars on the palate, plummy dark fruit esters, peppery clovey phenolics, dried fruit undertones - its all there. Hangs on the finish, drying, warming, low bitterness, lingering earthiness. Seriously decadent stuff, a sipper, but tremendous.

Bottle. 2013 vintage. Pours an unclear ruby red color with practically no head. Very little aroma except for a few whiffs of caramel and...freshness. Taste is something entirely else though - malt, caramel, dark ripe fruits, molasses, yeasts and alcohol. Very sweet and vinous with a full body and low carbonation and a sugary and fruity aftertaste. Pretty heavy stuff. Reminds me a bit of the Gulden Draak. Very good.

Vintage 2012 Appearance was cloudy brown with diminishing tannish tiny head, no lacing. Aromas are plum, sweet cherry, fig, toffee, molasses and ester yeasts. Taste are plum, fig, date, cherry, caramel, molasses, maple and warming alcohol. Palate was silky smooth medium-full body with soft CO2, then deep glorious fruits build a great finish. A Gem, try it with age.

Bottle, 750ml. A dark ruby beer with a big creamy head. Color is darker (almost completely dark) at the top. Aroma is of cinammon, alcohol, almond and dry fruits. Taste is bitter and somewhat sweet at the same time. It has a strong alcohol finish, yet it is never unpleasant or out of balance. Dense, rich and very complex. A great beer indeed.

2013 vintage. Pours a cola colour with nice fluffy 3 finger head that holds nicely for a good while. Aromas of dark fruits - dates, prunes, plums and cherries with toffee and dark chocolate. Wow. The taste is sweet but magnificent. Cherries, plums, raisins, caramel, with a pleasant booziness about it. Med to full bodied, slick in the mouthfeel. Excellent dessert sipper.
