Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

WOW, this brew is so thick it looks like melted taffy. The smell is of egg nog, apples, bananas, and that hard milky candy coating that dresses every jawbreaker/polka-dotted easter mini-malt candy egg. You can’t see through this beer with two 120watt bulbs physically touching the back of the glass(actually tested)--a feat accomplished by nearly no other beer. Mine was aged 18 months and has thick gloppidy glollops of yeast chunking around inside that are cool clover bursts of spicy flavor on the palate. Abbaye des Rocs anyone? Fantastic beer; one that could fit well in De Dolle’s lineup with the success of Tris Pistoles and Brune. Amazing belgian, in every sense of the beverage style. I will buy this again and again.

2008 750ml. Nice looking redish brown. Good head, laced my glass well. Fruity nose, enjoyable palate. Very very brown sugar flavor at first. After it came up to temp. the flavors blended better. Very Belgium. Clean finish.

Blah. This is a typical over the top hot Belgian beer. Probably would be a lot better with a year or two on it. Aroma was huge. Vinuous backbone with sweet caramel malt and alcohol jumping out. Pour was a decent murky brown with no bubbles and a one finger tan head. Taste was too hot and strong. Strong Vicks Vapo-Rub, caramel malt intertwined with hot alcohol and little carbonation.

This beer rocks. It’s got everything a strong, brown ale should have. The right balance of flavor, alcohol, sweetness and body that makes a Belgian strong ale totally drinkable.

Bottles at Århus Ølfestival 2008 (tastet at the same time). 2008 version: Pours a nice dark ruby red with almost no head. Aroma is vinious, fruity aswell as the flavour, but here it is a bit to vinious (7, 4, 7, 3, 16 - 3,7).
2004 version: Pours a nice dark ruby red with almost no head. Aroma of wonderful plum, vinious and caramel. Nice balanced flavour and body with plum, caramel and viniousity (8, 4, 9. 4, 18 - 4,3)
