4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 beastiefan2k (1921) - Lawrence (formely NYC), USA - JAN 8, 2007
2004 vintage, bottle Poured into a Corsendonk tulip glass. Pours thick mud-like, murky brown, completely no clarity. Looks like the bottom inch of sediment rich beer in a carboy. Minimal head that leaves a minimal lacing. Aroma is woo wee strong something spiced. Strong spices, licorice, anise seed, and more that I really dont know enough about. Just a hint of smoke as well. Beneath that a great chocolate and cocoa mix. Man its original especially for a Belgian brew. Really this tastes like a suped up version of Ancher OSA 2005 or I guess thats a light version of this. Taste flip flops a bit where the sweet chocolate plays the dominant role and the strong spice is right behind that. The body is just a bit on the thin side for me. Leaves a light spice aftertaste. Mouthfeel is a bit to soda like. But just so damn creative.
2003 vintage, draft No head a bit of lacing. On tap at Mugs Belgian Blast. This time it tasted a lot like an Anchor 2000, which I also had at the bar. This one was definitely chocolate-y but a lot oxidation. Thin taste, thin body, and low carbonation. 8/3/6/3/14.
I’ll stick with my 2004 bottle rating, who knows what happened to that keg and despite the lower % on the 03 version, this bottle doesn’t seem to be heading in this direction this quickly.

Catching up on old reviews -
Deep mahogany brown pour with tan head. A sweet aroma of dark fruit, bananas, caramel, cherries. The taste was extremely sweet and even overpowering at first. The warm and farther into the beer I got, the better I could pick out the tastes...malt, brown sugar, various fruits, cinnamon, cloves, molasses, candy. There also was a nice presence of earthy and bready yeast. Fairly moderate body and carbonation. Interesting complex beer, that I enjoyed in a small dose, but I don’t think I could handle the sweetness in more than that.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 sulawang (222) - British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 10, 2012
pours light root beer brown, minimal head compared to the blond, ringed retention, lots of slow-moving CO2 streams. Strong thick and heavy malts on the nose. Drinks with 8/10-level sweetness up front, alcoholic presence is apparent from the start, tastes of heavy malt, brown sugar (demerara/turbinado), figs, scotch, caramel, mild-medium bitter finish. Med-high complexity, med-high depth, good transitions, great carry, okay drinkability (less as the temperature raises). A potent dark beer with lots of flavour but also heavy and hits harder than the blond.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 cmonster (685) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAY 8, 2012
Draft. Pours murky amber-brown with a med-large tan head. Buoquet of dark fruit. Raisin, plum, prune, fig... you name, its in there. Very sweet aroma that matches the nose. Yeast and alcohol as well. Full body, sticky texture, and a very lengthy finish. A little too sweet for my taste, but still a great beer.
