ogivlado (3036), Zagreb, Croatia Nov 20, 2008 Bottled(750ml). -Cloudy yellow/golden coloured, huge frothy white head, spicy coriander nose. Lively carbonation. Typical and very pleasant BSA. Fruity, spicy and alcoholic taste with notes of hops and vanilla in the finish. 2008 vintage. drfabulous (1213), Columbia, Missouri, USA Nov 18, 2008 No love for the red? Why? Pale, but full of flavor. Lots of carbonation. Aroma sweet and nice. The blue was richer. Doggythedog (1541), Split, Croatia Nov 17, 2008 0.75l bottle at the Hopdevil shared with heavy. Poured a nice hazy orange-golden body. Big thick white head that went away at a medium pace. Fresh nose, orange rind, dust, some malt. Pleasant. The taste starts with some lovely fruitiness reminiscent of orange rind, some soap blunted by hopiness. Earthy and not too heavy. Soft and chalky. Dulled down hop aftertaste (some fruit too for a sec), ends up being a bit herbal later. Some low tingly fruity/agrumey acidity. No alcohol detected. Used the adjective ’’sublime’’ in my notes but that’s too strong. In any case, Het Anker shows its worth again. after4ever (2711), Brier, Washington, USA Nov 17, 2008 750, corked and baled. ’08. Thanks so much, Rich! Bright hazy straw under a pillowy platinum blonde head. The classic belgian pour, really. Sweet, somewhatcloying notes of toffee and some white fruit on the nose. Creamy medium body with plenty of fizz. Dust, green apples, and toffee. Beautifully done, but at this early juncture in its life, not much of a thrill.
Suttree (2701), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Nov 15, 2008 Updated: Nov 17, 2008Ths on of thoses cases where a beer is objectively good, but doesn’t really appeal to me. Nice aroma and it certainly looks good, but way to sweet and way too hot to really be a favorite. Certainly well made, but not my cup of tea. or beer. rlgk (3377), Vårgårda, Sweden Nov 3, 2008 Bottle, thanks to larsniclas. Golden color, huge white head. Marcipan aroma, yeasty, fruity and a bit sugary. Maricpan flavor, floral and with some alcohol. The blue one is so much better... pilsnerrogge (1770), Finspång, Sweden Oct 31, 2008 Bottled: Pours hazy, deep golden with a large head. Marzipan and orange aroma with some disturbing notes of sweaty socks and old cheese. light body. Flavour has more oranges, some caramel and a boozy finish. ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Oct 28, 2008 Appearance: Pours a clear, blonde body with a very tall, very white head.
Smell: Sweet-smelling, phenolic, a bit boozy, and simply chock full of rich fruitiness. Plenty of spice and fresh herbs as well. Pinch of yeast.
Taste: Sweet, sugary maltiness mixed with a herbal gentian taste, star anise, dried orange peel, and heavy-handed dose of pepper and spices. Fairly phenolic throughout. Fruity flavors of white grapes, peaches, green apples, and under-ripe plums. Minor hint of vanilla upon warming. Oh, and a big wallop of booze near the end. Candi sugar taste perks up now and again. Finishes dry and warming with a lingering mingling of perfumy, grapefruity components.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Well carbonated.
Drinkability: It’s certainly not subtle, as there’s tons going on here. A bit alcoholic initially, but once it starts coursing through your system you learn to live with it, even enjoy it, and focus on the expressive fruit character and punchy phenols. Still though, I’d stick with the blue, babies!
