The 2010 edition is a Dark Brown Ale at 9% ABV.
The 2011+ edition states Golden Ale on the label but is also a Dark Brown Ale at 10% ABV.

Bottle. 9.0%. Best before 07.01.13. As ’Gouden Carolus Easter Beer’. Pours a dark, hazy amber-brown with a khaki head. Good lacing. Aroma is sweet and a bit tart, with strong notes of dark fruit and anise, faint notes of cloves and nut and an alcoholic overtone. Okay, but somewhat cloying. Sweet, dark fruit, caramel and anise flavour. Same finish, a bit tart and with a lingering alchohol touch. Remote note of citrus hops. Overall well-made, but the anise is too cloying for my liking. 18.12.12.

Smaksprøve ombord på Fridtjofen: lett uklar, brunlig og med kort beige skum. Aroma og smak av mørk malt, svisker og noe lett brent og syrlig. Mild bitterhet også i ettersmaken. Ufrisk.

This is a very unique Belgian Strong Ale, fruity and earthy, packs a punch. 750 ml bottle poured into a schooner. Dark brown pour with a slight off white head, slight lacing. A little warm to serve at 63 degrees F., but still fine. Aroma of plum, cherry, chocolate, booze, hay, earth, raisin, and brown sugar. Has a vinous quality, reminding me of port. Medium sweet, light bitter, light sour, slight salty flavors. Full body, slick texture, soft carbonation, balanced finish. The sweet, fruity, spicy flavors are well balanced with the alcohol burn, making a delicious beer to serve with food, on par with wine. I recommend this ale for it’s unique flavor and balanced profile.

THOUGHTS: Finally found the Easter one. I think it’s the only one of the Gouden Carolus beers I hadn’t tried. Nifty, a licorice beer for Easter. Hid alcohol incredibly well. Slightly less complex than most Gouden Carolus beer, but somehow even easier to drink. Nice but subtle. TECHNICAL: Drank 4/1/2013. Bottle. Poured a very dark brownish red with red highlights and and average, off-white head that kept a decent sheet and left good to excellent lacing. The aroma had molasses, caramel, dark Belgian candy sugar; hints of chocolate; light spicy yeast; hints of maple syrup; slight hints of vanilla; anise; black licorice; and dark fruit. The initial flavor was moderate sweet; while the finish was heavily sweet and lightly bitter with an average duration. There was light roasted malt, caramel malt, dark candy sugar, anise, black licorice, cola, vanilla, watered down coffee, a little chocolate, and dark fruit. The flavor overall seemed a little watered down. The medium body was oily with soft but tingly carbonation and a lightly astringent finish.

Dark brown almost black with medium yellow creamy head. Very mild taste with strong liquorice note over all the tongue. Some remaining bitterness on the root.

Bottle. Heavy dark bread, cereal, roasted and milk chocolate for the malt, moderate orange, dough and dried leaves, with dried fig, raisin, date and nutmeg. Head is small to average in size, fizzy/frothy, beige with excellent yet thin lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is muddy dark brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly to mkoderately acidic, then finishes moderately sweet and lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, creamy with a lively carbonation and a heavily alcoholic finish. Heavy doses of dark dried fruits puts this Belgian Strong Ale over the top.

Big bottle, corked & caged. Very hazy yellow gold, towering white head. Mildly estery and spicy, cooked pineapple, light marzipan, honey. Nice.
