COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gouden Carolus Easter Ale is brewed once a year to commemorate Easter. It is a golden ale that is rich, full bodied and full of flavor and life. This ale was brewed and intended to drink with Easter dinner. This special brew may be laid down, it will increase in complexity and balance as years pass.
Gouden Carolus Easter Ale is the most limited production brew from the Het Anker brewery. Only 2000 cases are brewed each year.

The 2010 edition is a Dark Brown Ale at 9% ABV.
The 2011+ edition states Golden Ale on the label but is also a Dark Brown Ale at 10% ABV.

Bottle. 9.0%. Best before 07.01.13. As ’Gouden Carolus Easter Beer’. Pours a dark, hazy amber-brown with a khaki head. Good lacing. Aroma is sweet and a bit tart, with strong notes of dark fruit and anise, faint notes of cloves and nut and an alcoholic overtone. Okay, but somewhat cloying. Sweet, dark fruit, caramel and anise flavour. Same finish, a bit tart and with a lingering alchohol touch. Remote note of citrus hops. Overall well-made, but the anise is too cloying for my liking. 18.12.12.

Pana spora, drobno i średnio pęcherzykowa, po kilku minutach opada do nieregularnej pierzynki. Barwa ciemno bordowa, mętna, z drobinkami drożdży. Zapach dość słodki - charakterystyczny belgijski zapach suszonych i kandyzowanych owoców, miodu spadziowego, khaki, likieru karmelowego oraz czerwonego pieprzu... W smaku podobnie, suszona gruszka, figi i daktyle połączone z namoczonymi w rumie rodzynkami, wielkanocnym keksem bakaliowym i słodkim winem z ciemnych winogron. Treściwe, lekko wyklejające, bogate, średnio nagazowane, z delikatną korzenną goryczką i przyprawami (przede wszystkim gałka muszkatołowa i imbir) w posmaku oraz alkoholowym rozgrzewaniem w przełyku. Piwo świąteczne, kojarzące się z wielkanocnym ciastem, słodkie, deserowe, bogate.

2015 bottle. The cork just limped out of the bottle but it was carbonated when poured. Clear, chestnut brown color with ruby highlights and a thin khaki head. Pretty big aroma of sweet malt, demerara sugar, Belgian yeast and a hint of hops. That is classic Belgian dark ale except maybe a touch thin right now but could develop over time. Good.

Darker and sweeter body that still drinks light, as it warms anise fennel notes really come to dominate

(draft @ MacGregor’s - Henrietta, NY) Brown pour with a puffy tan head. Caramel aroma with yeast and spice underneath. Flavor is a lot of sweet malts with hints of caramel and toffee. Smooth and well blended but nothing really special.

Stick with the Noel and Blue for a better experience. This is good, but not in the league of the others.

Dark reddish brown colour, firm cream head. Aroma of liquorice, iron, caramel, malts. Light bitter flavour, caramel, burned sugar, roasted malts, sweet brown sugar, iron. Quite pronounced minerals. Finish caramel, dark, somewhat burned caramel, iron, roasted malts, liquorice root, brown sugar. Too bad of the strong iron notes.
(from 75cL bottle shared @ home. Procured at the brewery in 2012 or 2013. BBF 12 Feb ?16 - and definitely not a golden ale)

0,75L bottle (shared by FatPhil, thanks!), BB 17.02.15. Pours copper with light brownish head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is sweet, caramel, dark fruits. Flavor sweet, dark fruits, plums, caramel, and fennel. Overall: very nice brew.

Grote fles gekocht in Mechelen. Donkerbruin van kleur , de kraag verdwijnt snel tot een laagje op het bier dat lang blijft liggen. Ruikt zoetig, mout, bubblegum. Smaak is vrij zoet, bubblegum. beetje peper, hoestsiroop. Medium body. Een wat wrangzoete nasmaak. Niet zo mijn smaak.

750ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Cloudy dark brown color. Medium size, brown head, stays. Sweet, cummin seeds, raisins, brown sugars, dark bread in aroma. Dark bready, raisins, licorice, berries in taste. Pure breadyness in aftertaste. Nice full body. So bready. Beautiful brew!

As I pour, there’s an absolutely beautiful winey cognacky aroma. In the glass it’s less special, but there’s tonnes of caraway. Absolutely beautiful soft malty body. Very nice hoppy finish, even has the fullness of hops that I expect from fresh hops. Love the soft sweet malty body, some mammi, lovely rye bread. Palate so smooth. Totally love this. Underrate?
