C&C 750 mL bottle from Wine Warehouse Charlottesville., Pours a dark brown color with a large tan head. Perpetual head retention and decent lacing. Aroma of dark malts, bubblegum, huge spice notes including citrus peel, nutmeg, cinnamon as well as some floral notes. The taste is also very spicy with some of the same characteristics along with stone fruits, bubblegum, earthy notes, banana. Medium-full bodied, smooth, low carbonation. A little bit too sweet.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
75cl bottle, 2012 vintage, BBE 02/15. The word around is that this one is an anise bomb. Pours a very dark brown with an auburn tinge, medium-sized, yellowish-brown head. Aroma is quite sweet with a lot of marzipan, apricot and yeast. Some almond, aniseed and caramel. Taste is semisweet again with the Belgian marzipan and apricot yeast, caramel. Aniseed is fairly strong, especially in the aftertaste along with licorice, but it’s definitely no bomb, at least comparing to the 2013 Christmas ale. Or perhaps the aging has just muted it down, mellowed down the flavors. Quite full with fairly light carbonation, for a Belgian at least.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle @ home thx to benzai. Brown colour, small off-white head. Smells liquorice, raisins, alcohol, very sweet. Tastes sweet, raisins, alcohol, wood. Medium to full body, soft carbo. Americans would probably go crazy for this. For me it’s too sweet and too much.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours a deep clear bronze-hued brown body with a large creamy off-white head. Really nice looks. Nose is candi sugars, caramel, star anis and hints of herbs and licorice. Taste is sweet candi sugars and up front, then spices and star anis before smooth caramel notes and hints of herbs takes the finish. Full body, high carbonation. Perhaps not exceptional (with the exception of the assertive star anis touch, which is not quite common) but nevertheless a very nice BSA from Het Anker.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Rich and warm, loaded with licorice and fruit cake complexities
A clear, vibrant, deep mahogany body flashes cherry red highlights and supports a tall frothy-smooth light khaki head with solid duration leaving a couple solid, thick, jagged peninsulas of lace surrounded by several spots and spatters
Big red and black licorice open the show with a layer of doughy spice, and spirit-esque accents; herbal notes pick up on the palate while the silky smooth, med-heavy body rolls around emitting well restrained carbonation and offering further complexities of caramel drizzled apple, orange, and pear; sweet, warming residuals build and form barrel characteristics, deep, lightly charred, woody, flashes of fall leaves with echoes of sticky dates and raisins
