NoiZe (1289), Mooi Zeist, Netherlands Nov 10, 2009 Vintage 2000 Edition, thnx Skortila!: Black, brown colored brew. Malty, port-like aroma, not heavy. Flavor is malty, sugary sweet, raisin and a port-like aftertaste. Flavor becomes more and more smooth after warming up. At first it’s a bit thin, then it’s more smooth. Watch out for the left-overs in the bottle. Overall very enjoyable, but not really that special. ricke (74), Malme, Sweden Nov 9, 2009 Bottle. 2009 vintage.
The pour is dark reddish brown with a big off-white head that leaves nice lacings.
The smell is big an spot on. Lots of malty aromas of caramel, brown sugar and toffee. Pleasant heavy fruit aromas, yeast and alcohol.
The flavor is really sweet. From start to finish this one is all about sweetness - toasty malts, caramel, brown sugar, toffee. Notes of vinous fruits, wood, yeast and grass. The finish has some bitterness to it, more sweetness and notes of alcohol, hops and spices.
It has a full body and quite a lot of carbonation, which is welcome here since it lightens the heavy character, if only just a bit.
All in all, a complex, balanced and tasty beer. Due to the sweetness, it gets quite demanding after a while. Oscbert (532), Sacramento, California, USA Nov 2, 2009 ~Strong sweet alcohol scent with dried cherries, lots of darker sugars, some spices.
~Pours a dark deep amber brown color with small persistant creamy head.
~Sweet raisin and plum flavor, with brown sugar. Very sweet.
~Very thick creamy feel. Full bodied, chewy.
~ Wow! intense brew. Super malty and thick. I normally dont like beers like this. This one is a nice exception. MagisterLudi (5), Aarhus, Denmark does not count Nov 2, 2009 750 ML 2008. Despite a very lovely smell nothing in this beer works for me. It’s a complete taste overload of sweetness upon sweetness, and ends up coming across somewhat close to an ice tea. Agaguk (119), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Nov 1, 2009 Dark red brown appearance with a thick taned head. Aroma: toffee, caramel, cherries, vanilla, eggnog and brown sugar. Flavor: alcohol, cherries, salt, cinnimon and brown sugar. Palate: full body, lively carbonation, oily with adry finish. ChrisThomson (382), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 31, 2009 750mL Bottle.Lovely beer. Overall a bit sweet, but great complexity. Pours an red-amber colour wth good amount of dense tan head. Aroma of spice, port, and apples. Body is thick, and alcohol well hidden by the sweetness. Notes of caramel sweetnes, plums, nutmeg, nuts, and fruit notes. Finish iis slight bitterness, but very clean. Taverner (827), San Ramon, California, USA Oct 28, 2009 2008 Vintage. Pours a cola brown with beige head. The head sticks around for a while. Aroma is woody, nutty and malty. Notes of licorice. Flavor is sweet - very sweet. Notes of dark fruits, bananas, raisins, figs. Finishes on that sweet note. patrickfannon (274), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 21, 2009 Bottle. 25.4 oz. (2008) Split this with Jefferson in the top of the ninth inning as the Phillies clinched the National League Championship for the second consecuitve year. Pours a vivid, electric amber with a velvety, creamy tan head. Aroma of apples, grapes, raisins, vanilla, honey, clove, and hints of pepper, nutmeg, and ginger. Fuller bodied with a lovely warming sensation. Hides the alcohol perfectly. Bold, crisp, tart finish. Excellent Belgian strong ale. Highly recommended.
