Origin: Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor completes the taste pallet of the gamma Carolus-beers. Name: "Hopsinjoor" is a wordplay to for one thing the several hops which were used, and on the other hand the typical character of Mechelen of Gouden Carolus: the figure "opsinjoor" is intertwined with the history of Mechelen (see: www.opsinjoorke.be/Opsinjoorke/opsinjoor.htm). Kind of hops: 4 types of hops are used: Golding, Spalt, Hallertau and Saaz. These hops were fractioned at several times in the cooking process in order to keep a maximum of aroma. Regarding to taste we can say that the beer has a gentle, but nevertheless bitter aftertaste. Gold-yellow colour. Hoppy aroma. 50 IBU / 18.6 Plato

Pours amber with a nice lingering white head. Smells of dry malt, spice, pepper, pine, some citrus, hints of sugar. Tastes grassy and earthy with some peppery splashes and a dry malty finish. One of their best beers.

Hazy yellow of color with a white head. An aroma of spice, citrus and hops. A flavor of spice, hops and weak sweets.

Bottle. Yeast and hop aroma. Hazy golden with a thick white head. Very nice full flavoured body with the typical belgian yeast flavors. Notes of citrus flavours. Very nice complex bitter palate. Very nice beer even if it is a little bit too carbonated for my taste.

750 ml bottle. A cloudy medium golden beer with a rich, creamy, persistent and lacing white head. The aroma is strongly and nicely hoppy, with notes of grass and flowers. Light spiciness and some fruity notes. The malt and the yeast are present and combined with the hops give a harmonious sensation to the nose. The flavour has not much sweetness and has a crisp, citric hoppiness. Medium body and not much more, lively carbonation, dry long finish with medium to high bitterness, lightly alcoholic. Very good beer, enough complex with excellent clean bitterness and high drinkability.

I bought the bottle from the room temperature shelves at Greens and made the mistake of opening it without adequate chilling. The cork flew out in force and I had a gusher on my hand. The loss was only a small amount of beer though, so I will move on and get on with the review. The beer was poured into a Duvel tulip, and it looked pretty similar to that beer, as the body was pale in color with cloudiness, and had a huge head above it. The beer at first whiff did not smell very strong, but after deeper breathing, some spicy hop aromas were revealed. There was also a musty yeast smell typical of many Belgian beers. Taste showed that significant levels of hops were present here despite the lack of aroma. The hops were spicy and herbal in character and were the most significant flavor up front. More tasting revealed some sweetness in the form of pear, followed by a tart finish. The body was light and fluffy, and the beer was so quaffable, it was hard to believe the alcoholic strength. A nice melding of styles that seems to happen a lot more frequently recently as the Belgians seem to have taken on some of the fascination about hops American Craft Brewers have held for quite a while.

Hazy golden color with a massive head. Spices, yeast, light banana, some sweet citrus, some hops but not like I was expecting, and light malty grains. mouth feels a bit thin. Flavor is of earthy hops, crisp spices, yeast, fruit, and an overly bitter finish for the hops present in the aroma/flavor. No noticeable alcohol. Rather tasty and refreshing. Went amazingly well with sushi.

Bottle. Pours hazy dark yellow with an average, frothy, white head, mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Aroma is heavy malt -grain, hay, straw, meal-, average hops -flowers, herbs, grass-, heavy yeast -horse blanket, barnyard, earth, musty- with notes of pear, dust, and paper. Medium bodied, slick texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness and acidity, moderate bitterness.
