Slayer85 (582), Firenze, Italy Feb 14, 2008 750 ml bottle. An unclear dark red beer with a quite big and persistent beige head. The aroma is very rich and sweet, with notes of port, fruits (banana and orange), spices and a litlle bit of alcohol. The flavour is also very powerful and sweet, with nose of sweet wine, caramel and cherry. The alcohol is not extremely hidden, but is warming more than disturbing. Full body, lively carbonation (maybe too much for my liking), long lasting finish with light bitterness and more sweetness. Complex, powerful, flavourful and very warming. This is an outstanding Christmas beer. jmuhops (663), Winchester, Virginia, USA Feb 12, 2008 Pours lightly hazy copper-brown with a one-finger off-white head. Big candy sugar and spice aroma with a toffee and chocolate background. The chocolate comes through more in the flavor, where it’s joined by anise, heavy phenols, and musty yeast. Alcohol is apparent; it mixes with everything else for an unpleasant rubbery finish. Good, but I was expecting more from these guys. thegreenrooster (1811), St.louis, Missouri, USA Feb 1, 2008 Pour is a dark red with a large whtie head. Aroma is of dark malts and some peppery spice. Flavor is pretty decent with molasses and licorice with a touch of dark fruit and alcohol. A tasty beer with no alcohol showing up that is going to overpower. Finn (1473), Tromsø, Norway Jan 28, 2008 Deep red brown. A large creamy head that lasts. Filigrees on the glass. Unclear. Aroma of sweet fruit and berries. Flavor of plums. At last the alcohol kicks in giving you a warm sensation. OK winter warmer. EricE (446), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Jan 26, 2008 Dark read pour with little head. Very strong bubble gum aroma. Medium body. Strong bubble gum liquorice taste to it with some bitterness at the end. Very strange...not bad, just not for me. kempicus (350), Wellington, New Zealand Jan 25, 2008 Pours a deep burgundy red and looks very inviting! really smells like liquorice and tastes like that too. Dangerously drinkable at 10.5% probstk (1011), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Jan 24, 2008 33 cl bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. BB 29/08/10.
App.: Clear, deep mahogany, large tan head.
Aroma: Lots of sticky dark dried fruit, licorice, ginger(?), a bit vinous and woody, some alcohol, some bubblegum esters, warm spices, molasses, bread/cookie/biscuit.
Palate: Medium-full body, soft effervescence.
Flav.: Lots of molasses and deep, dark licorice, a bit vinous and woody, some green hop notes, more warm spice than the nose; on swallowing, quite sweet, tingling alcohol and a touch of bitterness; leaves a thick, oily licorice and dark malt afterbite.
A big beer. “Christmas” brews are often over-spiced for my tastes, but this one works well. gotohelunc (473), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jan 20, 2008 Bottle. The color of a coke with a big, inviting, foamy, tan head. Smells of licorice, caramel, and spices. Real nice sweet, malty, spicy flavor with a touch of cherries. Something in the finish is quite sour, and when combined with the heavy alcohol notes, it’s pretty harsh to drink. Certainly an interesting beer and a good one, just not an easy one to drink.
