COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For the Christmas and New Year festivities the Gouden Carolus range is now extended to include this seriously heavy strong brown ale. Het Anker are thus rekindling a long lost tradition from the days of yore when they marketed Cardinal Christmas and Anker Christmas.

330 ml, bought in the Norwegian Vinmonopolet. Pours black with an offwhite head. Nose of sweet malts and ripe banana. Aroma of sweet banana, fruit, hints of licorice. Tastes nice, very special, have never tasted anything like it.

Aroma: intense caramel, cough syrup, cloves, spices, very malty. Appearance: clear, dark amber, small, creamy, beige head. Taste: heavy sweet. Palate: lively carbonation, sweet carry on, intensify, very syrupy, caramel, toffee, spices again. Overall: quite a nice Belgian Strong Ale, intense aroma, maybe a bit heavy on the cough syrup! Bottle from Beers of Europe, Kings Lynn.

Tap at Brasserie V. Pours raisin-brown, minimal mocha head. Licorice on the nose in a big way: just black Twizzlers, on and on. Taste is similar, but with some dark chocolate and clove notes as it warms. Nice beer, more tempered than in the bottle.

Bottle at Mr. Goodbar in Buffalo, NY (good beer club). I just did not care for this at all. Super super heavy on anise in both the smell and taste. If you like black licorice, you’ll probably love this. Didn’t feel as boozy as it is. Good texture to it. I can tell it’s a well-made beer, just not my thing.
