Commercial Description:
For the Christmas and New Year festivities the Gouden Carolus range is now extended to include this seriously heavy strong brown ale. Het Anker are thus rekindling a long lost tradition from the days of yore when they marketed Cardinal Christmas and Anker Christmas.

Murky brownish red body topped by a frothy tan head. Lacing is nice and appealing. The aroma is Sweet and malty with a firm yeast backing. The flavor is big and sweet. Much sweeter then the average Beligian Strong. I really like the flavors. The aftertaste is woody and sweet. The body is big and warming. The alcohol is quite noticeable and is very pleasant to drink in cold weather.

Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. The head is 2 two fingers thick and creamy tan. The nose is earthy, some cherry, woody, light alcohol, rummy, some balsamic aromas. The flavor is earthy, mild Belgian/yeasty character, cherry and wood, some sweetness, similar dubbel characters, balsamic flavors. The palate is lively and crisp with a very mild alcoholic warmth.

750 ml. Pours dark brown, ruby red when held to light. Head is light brown and small-medium. Aroma is slightly spicy toffee. Flavor is toffee-caramel with some alcohol warmth, turning to a dryer date-raisin-fig. Palate is creamy smooth with a nice dry prickly alcohol finish. A spiciness that subtly hints at coriander, ginger, and bitter orange peel. Excellent winter holiday warmer, even though I sampled in April!

Bottle (in NZ), pours a deep reddish brown with a filmy head. A christmas spice hop aroma, with cakey malt, caramal, banana, currants, licorice, and rum. A full malty palate, sugary, with caramal malt with those christmas flavours picked up in the aroma. The finish is firey and spicy.

Bottle sampled with Beerded_one. Pours dark bronze with a large light tan head. Aroma of black licorice, spices galore, fruit, and citrus. The flavor is smooth, loads of amazing spices, licorice, citrus, moderate carbonation, and fruit. Excellent brew.

Totally different after aged a year. It was a black licorice catastrophe but now yields delicious flavors of ripe plums and juicy raisons. Alcohol is better masked and aftertaste is complex and yeasty.

Just too overpoweringly medicinal...with VERY strong licorice and alcohol. Just couldn’t get past the anice assault on my senses...although the alcohol assault pulled me through to save the day.
