For the Christmas and New Year festivities the Gouden Carolus range is now extended to include this seriously heavy strong brown ale. Het Anker are thus rekindling a long lost tradition from the days of yore when they marketed Cardinal Christmas and Anker Christmas.

Pours clear dark red with a long lasting and light lacing frothy big beige head. Aroma is complex, spicy and very estery with anise, raisin, plum, roasted malt, caramel, bubblegum, pear, strawberry, red apple, apricot, banana and candy. Taste is medium sweet with a tiny acidic note. Body is medium, texture is light creamy and oily, carbonation is moderate. Finishes sweet.

12/10/2010 8:30:34 AM Bottle from Beer Planet. Dark brown body with puffy, pinkish head. Nose of malts and fruits. Taste quite sweet, wheaty and alcy. The whole thing is too much for me, too much alcohol and too much sugar. Overrated in my humble opinion.

Deep toffee colored pour. Big slight tan head. Plenty of lacing. Sugar and spice in the nose. Boozy mouth with notes of the sugar, plums and spice. Not bad.

Bottle from Dranken Pauwels. Very dark brown, thin beige head which dissipates quickly. Nose is very Christmassy. Reminds me of Sasparilla. Clove, liquorice, maybe coriander, very fruity, then the classic Gouden carolus: red wine vinous, dark chocolate, dark fruit, prune, raisin, fig, pine cone. Taste is liquorice, clove, coriander, prune, raisin, fig, dark chocolate. Dominated by the liquorice and something spicy and pine. Nice Christmas version of the classic.

After deep mahogany-brown pour with almost no head, strong liquorice and caramel aroma. Taste is similar, some additional herbals from somewhere, with dry finish that includes bitterness from a roasted malt. High carbonation. Complex, unhinged, nice.

Casi negra, casi opaca. Espuma reducida, cremosa. Aroma muy potente y sabroso. Puding, dulce malta.

330 ml bottle. Pre 2008 vintage. Pours a very dark clear brown with huge white head. Aromas of earthy dark fruit and licorice. Flavors of flat cola, allspice, anise, leather and dark caramel. Interesting.

Nice Christmas seasonal. The herbs are not overwhelming but add a subtle touch to an already great beer.

Ruikt en smaakt zeer zoet, haast naar drop. Mooie donkere kleur, haast zwart. Echt een kerstbiertje voor de koude dagen. Dat is wel meteen het nadeel. Het bier is vooral zoet en zwaar. Je zal hier niet scherper van worden...

2011 vintage, 11.2 oz bottle. Pours a deep plum color with ruby highlights and orange edging, capped with a tall khaki head of foam that settles slowly to a ring and film, leaving a wall of tight foamy lace. Nose involves rum raisin cake, figs, cherries, lots of dark fruit, spicy esters, a light briny, vinegary quality, a hint of cardboard oxidation, some marshmallow, peaches, brown sugar, toast. Very sweet, somewhat bitter, lightly tart. Medium to full bodied, viscous and oily yet fairly actively carbed, with a long fruity sweet and tart warming alcoholic finish. Not terribly past its prime, but it’s just too sweet and unbalanced in general to be really enjoyable. Definitely a lot of interesting things going on, decadent and dessert-like, but just a bit over the top.
