Commercial Description:
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Not my favorate triple.. Malty yeast aroma and flavor. Not impressed with the weak head and lacing on this orange colored brew. Expected more fruit notes on my palate.

33 cL bottle, trade with Dedollewaitor. Pours hazy orange with a white head. Aroma is light caramel malt, yeast spiced and light orange fruity. Smooth sweet caramel malt flavour, light sugarish sweet and with a mellow yeast note. Goes into a more spiced flavour with a light orange fruit note. Ends with a fruity note at first but gains a mild woody flavour and dryness into the far finish. Nice and quite interesting.

dark gold under a large, frothy white head. aroma is less than exciting with some honey and lagerish notes, but also some sweetness. flavor is pretty plain for a triple. yeasty with some sugar but not really bold. doughy. nutty. no spices. drinkable, but far from great.

Bottle. Golden coloured ale with a medium white head. Aroma of orangefruit, alchohol, yeast and some lemons as well. The flavour is also dominated by fruit, but there’s some spice to. Nice thick mouthfeeling, almost like carbonated cream :). I’ve tasted better triples, but this one is quite nice though.

On tap at Max’s. Amber-yellow with a white head. Smells very grainy. Nice and thick with a sweet bread and yeast taste. Nice full body. I liked it.

Hazy amber with huge white short lasting head. Sweet and fruity aroma with yeast and coriander notes. Sweet and very spicy flavor. Dominant alcohol presence. Ends dry.

Goliath labeled bottle, poured into tulip and chalice glasses, has a almost pale yellow gold with lots of effervesence, some amber-orange highlights in the pour, some haze in there, great amount of foamy bubbles that gives a large creamy-foamy white head that flattens out a bit but is lasting throughout the drinking experience, leaves foamy lacing on the glass, aromas of pear and orange fruit with light malt, bread and some malt sweet aromas, yeast with floral, dough and honey fragrances, initially there are light malt and sweet flavors, then citrus orange and lemon flavors appear that turn to a floral and pepper finish, alcohol is hidden well, just some warmth on the palate, mouth feel is bubbly on the tongue with a little creaminess, I am surprised that this triple does not get higher ratings, I really enjoyed this beer.

750 ml. bottle. Certainly drinks more like a tripel rather than a Belgian Golden as on the neck label. Pours a slightly hazy deep golden color. Produces a huge fluffy and pillowy white head with excellent retention throughout the entire glass. Thick layers of of sheeting lace coat the sides of the chalice. Fairly assertive nose of fresh yeast, wet hay, earth, ripe pear and banana along with a peppery/spicy hop presence. Palate was very lively and spritzy as expected for the style with a medium body. Flavor started out on the sweet fruity side but quickly transformed into a somewhat harsh, metallic-like, overly bitter finish. Personally I like a Tripel that presents more on the sweeter side and this one seems to be too generously hopped in the finish. The 9% alcohol is not shy but nicely warming. Certainly worth a try but only an average Belgian Tripel compared to many others out there.
