Commercial Description:
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Bottled. Golden colour with mediumsized white creamy head, lacing. Aroma is fruity, slightly yeasty, grassy and mildly earhty. Also some mild notes of sweet alcoholic notes. Flavour is fruits, earth, some grassyness as well as herbs and mild spices. The alcohol doesn’t show that much in the flavour, but does give a very big warming feel when going down the throat.

Had the pleasure of sampling this at the 1/27/2008 Pittsburgh ratebeer.com gathering and festival upstairs, Sharp Edge Creekhouse. It will be a long time, if ever I am invited again and I see a spread of bottles like I did there - ever again. I am not good enough for the beers that were that we sampled! For example, how about this beer; GOLLIATH, thanks Ryan! Sweetish aroma, typical of trippels, perhaps some tartness on the olfactory. Cloudy pale yellow. Goodly carbonation. Enjoyable bubbliness for a trippel. Rather strong on the palate. Alky personality is not well hidden, it is confident. Overall, quite a decent palate for a trippel.

Sampled at the RBPG; bottle courtesy of Ryan. Light fruity nose, yeasty with banana bread and a mild spicy nuttiness. Cloudy pale dull amber-white, with a thin head. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Banana bread taste, with yeast chalkiness and mild floral spice. Vanilla pudding. A little bit soapy? Not bad.

A decent middle of the road tripel. Aroma of light fruit (apple/pear). Pour was a nice light gold with a 2 finger white head. Taste was very fruity and sweet. Like a fruit cup with carbonation and an alcoholl burn. Decent carbonation and a nice bitey yeasty aftertaste. A good suprise.

Shared with Sean at Pizza Port bottle shop. Cool bottle. Very popular and sells quickly (because of cool bottle). Yellow 1 finger small-to-microbubble head. Some corriander in the aroma. Taste is sweet. Some hop bitterness. Well balanced. Maybe some orange peel bitterness. Drinkable, but not super drinkable.

Draft at Monk’s Cafe, Philadelphia. Hazy yellow-orange with a thin whispy head. The aroma is sweet banana creme. The flavor has more of a spicy edge, warming to the palate. Still a sweet base, with a bit of bubblegum twist. Good Belgian. (#3187, 11/9/2007)

Bottle: Pale caramel, dirty, thick and hazy, large frothy off-white head, spotty lacing.   Musty and barnish malt nose.   Very minor herbish and floral notes.   Seems hearty, more bready than floral.   Somewhat comes across as an American example.   Fairly sweet on the tongue.   Has a weird astringent twang on the backside.   Body and mouthfeel are fairly moderate.   Slight alcohol is noticeable.   Tiz okay, but wished for it to be a bit more floral.   Other than that, fairly average for a Tripel.
