Commercial Description:
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Pours a fogged straw gold with a white head that falls very quickly. Nose is like wet wood and an almost musty character as well. Flavor is a bit antiseptic. Earthy and with a bit of alcohol on the tongue. Feel is decent. Nice bubble hitting the tongue. Kind of like an attack of small little bubbles just bombarding your mouth. Drinkable, sure. This is more of a tripel to pound, but not one to savor and enjoy. More of the brute of tripels I would say. Hence the name maybe?

Clear gold, aroma of yeast, orange, alcohol is barely detectable, slightly metallic. Body is fairly heavy, alcohol is noticeable in the flavor. A little spicy(clove?), with a well balanced light sweetness. Worth a taste

33 cl. bottle - pours a slightly cloudy gold with slight carbonation and thick white head; strong hop and spice aroma mix; flavors blend well together and pack a nice punch; a very good tripel

Pours a cloudy peachy orange color with a lot of yeast in suspension and a thick, frothy, white head. Appealing aroma of orange peel, coriander and yeast. The flavor although, feels more dull than the aroma, there’s still the orange peel, coriander and yeast but it feels less sharp and pleasant. The body is medium with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation.

Bottle, 33 cl. Little cloudy, deep golden color, with a nice creamy white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma a bit spicy, yeast, flowery hops. Between medium en full body. Taste = start a bit sweet, fruity, good bitterness, love the great balance with the little spicy touch, dry finish. Fine tripel to drink.

(Bottle, Hörnan Belgobar, Stockholm) Orangey yellow colour with foamy white head, rather cloudy. Fruity nose with dried fruit, mango, pineapple and spicy hops. Malty, slightly yeasty taste with fruity notes of dried pineapple and mango. Rather fiery mouthfeel. Balanced sweetness. Rather complex, more so than most standard tripels. Really nice beer.

Very golden color, little head which completely vanishes. Tastes a little of alcohol. Some carbonation is present. Not the greatest you will ever have but not bad either. 25.4 oz bottle.
