Commercial Description:
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Not too bad. Pours a boring mirky straw color with a cheapo big bubbled head. Aroma is tangy and fruity. Flavor is sweet and tangy, and a bit too bubbly, but no off tastes at all.

Bomber shared with lunch guests, who could not distinguish this from other Belgian yeasty beers. A bit on the sweet side, with great foamy head, creamy mouthfeel and cloudy golden body. Aroma is pepper and some spice, which stays on the palate. Nciely balanced. Satisfying and only mdoerately drying mouthfeel.

Pours amber with a thin white head. Smells sugary with some hoppy citrus undertones. Taste is peppery with some underlying maltiness. Fair for what it is.

pours a dark cloudy yellowish gold with a one finger fluffy white head. aroma is of bread and lemon with a touch of alcohol and hops. has a light to medium body with nice lacing. flavor is bread, lemon, and a little alcohol. has some spiciness to it as well and has some nice carbonation to it. a pretty nice tripel! as it warms the bread aroma and flavor gets stronger and some grain aroma and flavor comes out. feels silky, fluffy, and full on the palate. pretty good.

Pours a deep, thick amber with dark, sandy particulate. A fluffy head leaves a fat halo and sticky lace. Aroma finds light florals and some sharp cheese to a base of fruity yeast. Nice body. Thick flavor finds ripe fruits carried by sweet malts. An equal amount of sugars and bitters in the finish. Big yet well-balanced... which are good qualities for a "giant".

Pours cloudy yellow/amber with a large white head that fades slowly to a thin ring leaving decent lacing. Spicy phenols w/ a floral hop boquet. Taste is yeasty spice with a clean hop bitterness. A little alcohol warmth but not overbearing. Finish is a little sweet. Overall a decent triple.

In short: A straightforward yeasty strong Belgian blonde ale without much personality. Drinkable but very simple.
How: Bottles750ml, 330ml. Usually with 6+ months of age
The look: Cloudy blonde body topped by an medium off-white head. Some bottles had a lot of particles, some didn’t
In long: This is a simple, somewhat brutal beer that does not offer much more than a little slap on the palate. 9% is very apparent, honeyed malts sweetness on the attack with a caramel finish. Very yeasty. Fruity notes of ripe bananas and ripe pineapples. Limited hops presence. Not bad, just a total lack of complexity. Really simple beer that has all the class, refinement and sophistication of the dude of the label.
