Commercial Description:
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Pours a hazy golden with a pillowy white head. Aroma is spicy, peppery and earthy with a hint of coriander. The aroma strikes me as a cross between a a triple and a saison. Taste has a thick earthy mustiness and lots of spiciness. Full rich mouthfeel with very lively effervescene that does not interfer with the flavors. Further down the glass thick fruiteness and candy sugars come into the taste. All in all a very nice beer - it struck me as having qualities from tripels, saisons and blonde ales.

Whole Foods, Sarasota, Fl. - 11.2 oz bottle. Pours a brightly colored, yet murky light golden with a thickish white head that lasts quite a while. Grassy aroma with floral hints. Flavor is boozy with some candied sugar notes, bananas and of course alcohol. One dimensional. Mouthfeel is a bit metallic with lots of carbonation. Expected much more.

Quite well carbonated, it pours with a frothy, large bubbled, four-finger thick, tan colored head that starts to form a rocky head as it falls back into the beer. The beer is an almost clear, full copper color. The aroma is quite fruity, it smells of a fresh cut Macintosh; both the acidity and the bright fruitiness. There seems like there might be a hint of oxidation in the aroma, but it seems to only accentuate the apple note. There is a nice, but light, sweet malt note here and also a hint of mustiness.

The taste is quite sweet up front, but remains quite light on the palate. There is a nice spiciness here, which helps to offset the up front sweet fruitiness. The sweet fruit notes definitely remind me of apples, though perhaps not as distinctly as in the aroma. In the finish is an astringency and an almost hot note that really goes a long way towards balancing the sweet notes. There is a light mustiness here as well, and there is also a bit of oxidation, which seems to have boosted the malt character a bit; the oxidation is distinctive but actually makes the malt a bit richer.

(750ml bottle) Big white head atop a lightly hazed apple juice body. Aroma is medium sweet, apple, some dirt/leaves, light alcohol. Taste is medium sweet, honey, apple, some pear, alcohol (dessert liqueur), spice. Some herbal in the finish. Sticky full body with some dryness in the finish.

Clean, grassy, sugary aroma. Thick white head as would be expected. It has a light coppery color. The flavor is sweet, somewhat fruity, more apple than citrus. The mouthfeel is a little bit sticky, and it finishes bitter. You can definitely feel the alcohol in your mouth and in your stomach. Overall, a very solid beer.

Hazy gloden hue. Rocky white head. Great yeast, biscuity pale malts nose. Great carbonation and mouthfeel. Pleasantly balanced with herbal hops, and funked yeast. Quite drinkable and enjoyable, despite the fact that dingbag Turdferguson froze a bottle of this in the freezer, killing all sense of goodness and carbonation from within this lovely brewski. I had a fresh bottle, and it made me smile. I have also had this on draught at the Moan and Dove in Amherst.

Tasted at Belgium Comes to Cooperstown, July 16, 2005. Hazy blonde with a thin white head. Very light spiced hopped aroma. Rather uninteresting blonde trippel with light spices, coriander, but nothing special.
