Commercial Description:
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Bottle. Did I step into a bakery? This beer has the aroma of bread in it so much, that I’m more hungry now than thirsty. Nice malt aroma and with the slight lemon from the hops and the yeast aroma, this beer gets along just fine with my nostrils! Nice white head too! Upon tasting it, the bakery scent is also recognizeable in the flavour. A rather high carbonation makes it wonderfully prickly on the tongue. This is a very interesting tripel, which I’ve had once before, but didn’t take as much notice of it at the time. I’ll remember it in the future!

(Bottled) Hazy orange with medium, foamy head. Fresh aroma of orange-peel and lemon, some yeast and perfume. Crisply lemony, yeasty and mildly spicy (orange-peel, white pepper, lavender) flavor with sugary-syrupy sweetness, which hides the ABV well. Medium-bodied, a bit syrupy palate with balanced carbonation. A quite nice, perfumy and sweetish tripel.

Bright golden ale with a remarkably firm, persistent, rocky head. Leaves a beer moustache upon first sip. Citrusy, bready tripel aroma - very inviting. Oranges, raisins, apricots, spices. Carbonated mouthfeel, perhaps a little too much. Bitter, dry finish that lasts. Becomes creamy around the tip of the tongue. Alcohol warmth at the very end, trickling down the throat. Quite pleasing.

Bottle... Clear yellow ale with a mid-sized, frothy, white head. Terrific retention. Yeasty aroma with lots of white bread, biscuit and toffee. No overbearing, fruity esters like most tripels. Medium bitter and a touch buttery. Rich malt. Full-bodied and fizzy. Finishes bitter and dry. Reminds me a bit of Westy Blond or St. Bernardus Blanche. Very good!

Hazy orange, big foamy head, lace. Fruity (honey, apricot) and malty aroma with some yeasty notes. Delcious sweet yeasty, quite alcoholic with some hops under malty base. Long hoppy and alcholic aftertaste. Complex enough and pleasant triple.

This is somewhat of a disappointing tripel. It starts out looking great, a light amber body with steady carbonation and a tall, rocky head. But the aroma, although a pleasant light malt with sweet cherries and a suggestion of yeast, is fairly faint. Light-bodied, the flavor is reduced to a bready, sweet malt alone, the only add-on being a touch of alcohol. The finish is a flavorless alcohol dryness. I even begin to doubt the 9% abv claim, as I’m an ol’ fart and drinking this didn’t make me the least bit sleepy

Dark gold body with a persistent white head. The aroma is musty and leathery with a hint of some cinnamon and sweat. The taste is sweet with some pears and cinnamon. There is a nice spicy finish. There is also a little vinous character that keeps this interesting. A nicely done and well balanced tripel for such a high abv. The mouthfeel is highly carbonated with a medium body.
