Commercial Description:
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Bottle, Brewtopia. Pale golden with thick creamy off-white head. Sweet, heavy custard aroma is not pleasant but has some ginger and ripe fruit. High carbonation. Very sweet. Some mineral and powdery elements. Way too sweet and too much talc, not my thing at all.

Tasting at Brewtopia. Tasting at Brewtopia. Nice clear golden color. Aroma of yeast, apples and some citrus tartness is detected. Flavor is very yeasty and has some odd sweet/sour notes going on. Odd.

Hazy light gold. Fruity, sweet with hints of 7-UP. Very sweet, plasticy with notes of pears. OK beer, but it’s a bit too sweet and spritzy for my personal tastes.

Pours out a mostly clear golden/straw color with a big, lasting white head. Aroma is of some yeast and some lemon zest. Taste is rather smooth for the 9%. Some light fruits and citrus flavors go with some yeast and grain notes, slightly dry finish.

11.2 oz bottle received from Beer of the Month Club. Pours a crystal clear gold with lots of bubbles rising to the surface. Large white head that lasted until mid-glass and left partial lace. The aroma is slightly sour with yeast and a few notes of lemon. The flavor is mildly sour, but is more dominated by yeast with some grain. Become very dry towards the finish and there is a some lingering dryness/bitterness well after the swallow.

Aroma of mild hops and yeast, hints of leather. Pours a gold, slightly amber color with a thick white head that stays around for the duration, and strong lacing. Taste of citrus hops, balanced with honey malt. Full bodied, with a slightly sticky texture and good carbonation.

I thought this beer was terrific. During my visit to Belgium, I was surprised at how many beers I tried that struck me as just average (as if everything could be awesome), and this one was definitely a cut above some others. It poured a hazy yellow with good head that formed a scummy island of foam in the middle of my glass and left very good lacing. Aroma was slightly sweet and light with a pleasant wheat smell and some light sweetness. Flavor was a very nice earthiness, and some floral notes at the start and finish of each sip. A clean and very dry mouthfeel. I thought this beer was terrific. I would highly recommend this beer. I bought this bottle at Beer Mania and drank it at a friend’s apartment.

Pours a hazy honey-gold color with an aroma of sour apple, toffee, malt, and some hops. Head is lacy, soapy, and oily all at once. Tastes of sugar, sweet apples, and caramel with a slightly sweet finish. Laces up the glass nicely. Good stuff.
