Commercial Description:
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

0.33 l bottle, cellared 15 months. Hazy deep golden color. Sweetish, bready, perfumed, honeyish and spicy aroma with vanilla, clove and pepper. Bittersweet flavor with honey, clove, pepper, orange, some herbal notes and hints of sharp alcohol. Smooth oily palate. Well made tripel with good basic flavors.

Bottle from Dranken Geers. Hazy gold, no head. Maybe not the greatest version of this beer, really a little flat as a beer, carbonation stings like a bugger, but throws no head. Maybe the bottle fermentation didn’t take well. Very fruity. Not much of the 9% ABV comes through. Very metallic due to over carbonation.

Bottle: Pours a hazy deep golden with a white head that fades to a strong film. Interesting aroma- vanilla wafers, rubber bands, buttery pale Belgian malts, and white pepper. The carbonation is lively, yet remains creamy. The flavor has a mild sweetness upfront, reminiscent of vanilla wafers. It also has a nice Belgian yeast character which is slightly musty and earthy- which later offers some peppery phenolic character and other various spice notes. Has a nice rounded Belgian pale malt emphasis, with less sweetness than many other Tripels. Pretty solid.

(Dégusté avec french tickler) Une biere blonde avec un mince collet non collant. Odeur de canelle, fruité, alcohol et poires. Gout de blé, pain brun et un peu salé.

Gold, slightly hazy, with a big gushing white head. Yeast and leathery malt in the aroma. Taste has plenty of alcohol and a bit of fruit. Quite a dry finish. Not entirely sure why I didn’t like this much as I thought I would. Somehow it lacked class and star quality.

App.: Cloudy golden/yellow poor, off-white head, little lacing

Aromas: Coriander, citrus, caramel, roots/earth, thym, light pepper

Palate: Nice even long lasting bitterness, salty, good sweetness at start, alcohol, medium body and carbonation

Flavors: Caramel, light pepper, earthy, yeast and light alcohol

Notes: Very good brew overall... aromas remind me of a light Fin du Monde
