Commercial Description:
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Pours hazy orange-gold with a large white head. Aroma is floral and fruity hops. Taste is moderate yeastiness and a hint of cream. Bitter finish. Overall a very nice tripel.

750 Bottle...Off-white head that shrinks to a cm...cloudy golden body--close to copper...clove in the nostrils and whiffs of orange tucked into a fresh yeast bed....as it sits those scents mingle and become intensified...Wow holy carbonation...after I get over it, the same aromas come through to the tongue, with a slight addition of malt...a combined sour + citrus finish with a yeasty bite, its good...pretty typical for this style...extreme carbonation is a bit of a turn off though....as it sits, way more yeast protrudes into the aroma and flavor...also the massive carbonation subsides as it sits...props to the disguised alcohol...lacing is also weak...very similar on draft

A very forgettable beer. Pretty typical for a tripel, even its smoothness.

75cl bottle from Willow Bend Liquors (Tampa, FL). Rated on 3/14/08. Pours a cloudy dark golden with a thin white head. Minimal head retention. Aroma is sweet, caramel, lemon. Flavor is malt, sweet caramel and honey, hops. Slightly bitter throughout with a bitter, quick finish. Generally a medium-bodied ale with somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Would have enjoyed more with less hoppiness.

Bottle. Small rocky, white diminishing head with fair lacing. Hazy, lightly cloudy golden orange body. Average aroma of bread, caramel and grain. Sharp average/heavy hop aroma, spiced with coriander. Medium body, oily texture, lively carbonation and a metallic bitter finish. The flavor is moderate sweet and moderate/heavy bitter.

Hazy dark gold orange color with a big, fluffy off-white head. Aroma is lightly peppery with fruit and flowers. All in a light blond way. Nice fruit start; just a touch of pepper or spice; some heat. Pale malt or biscuit behind all that. It’s pretty tasty. Finishes more dry than not. A little sugar is in the wings. Good drink.

Bottle shared with and courtesy of heavy (thanks!)
Poured a nice murky darker orange body with a big bubbly head that went away slower than I expected at first. The noise was spicy, malty, some alcohol... bit sweet. The taste was somewhat simple but quite nice. Violets, candy, caramel... smooth mouthfeel, flowery maltiness. some chewy hop in the aftertaste. Nicely delicate but not a world beater.

26/05 0.33 l bottle from belgianshop.com. Poured murky copper orange body with bigger fluffy head, but it didn’t lived for long though. Aroma is OK, but not so nice as it is often in tripels, some fruits from old yeast. I appreciate sugar wasn’t added to have its distinct flavor, and although it’s pretty bitter it have subtle sweetness which specially emerge in aftertaste, which is very long and pleasant. Back to flavor, it’s dominated by orange, citrus and that yeast which made its job. Not so usual but I must confess interesting and I’m not complaining, although there are much better tripels.
